Evidence found on DB Cooper tie means plane hijacking mystery could be solved
- tptacek 3y agoI went looking to see if there were better sources for this than The Sun, and the other sources are also kind of sketch (Coast to Coast AM is above the fold for it). Is this a serious story?

- AdamN 3y agoTook me a while to parse this. Not sure what the relationship is here: 1/ you clearly do think the source tells you something about the credibility (in your case you now think NYT is not highly credible), 2/ the laptop story was given to the Post, it's not like they gumshoed it, 3/ the hospital bombing was about a current event which typically carries a lower bar than something that can be verified over days like the laptop story or the DB Cooper heist. This isn't a defense of the NYT, they definitely lost credibility with that debacle which could have easily been fixed with tighter headlines and more circumspection in the initial reporting.
- ejb999 3y agoThe relationship is the GP, was wondering if there is a more 'reliable' source than 'the-sun', i.e. a bigger name paper with credibility - I think the person you were responding to is just saying these days it really doesn't matter who reports it - big name, little name, there are no guarantees ... so even if the NYTimes ran the article, there is no guarantee it is any more true than 'the-sun'
- philwelch 3y agoI’ve been following Eric Ulis for some time now. As far as independent hobbyist cold case investigators go, he seems to be a serious enough person who is operating in good faith.
- tptacek 3y agoThanks!
- rokkitmensch 3y agoI'm surprised to learn nobody's done the old DNA dragnet yet.
- InSteady 3y agoThey have and didn't find anything conclusive (two small samples not matching any known suspects). The hobbyist researcher wants access to the tie so he can test a specific adjustment pin that is concealed in the knot of the tie, which he interviewed FBI agents and learned they were unaware of. Judge will not release the tie under a FOIA request, because it is not a document. No surprise there.
- halfcat 3y agoAlso isn’t the DNA they have just from a tie left on the plane? Meaning, the “chain of custody” of DNA isn’t very solid, i.e. it could be anyone’s DNA?
- rokkitmensch 3y agoNot "known suspects" but "all relatives foolish enough to put themselves into the public DBs", hence "dragnet".
- rurban 3y agoPardon, but wasn't DB Cooper's identity already solved by his surviving kids a year ago? https://cowboystatedaily.com/2021/12/19/pilot-says-hes-solved-d-b-cooper-case/ https://cowboystatedaily.com/2021/12/19/pilot-says-hes-solve...
- halfcat 3y agoThere are dozens of people who have either claimed to be DB Cooper, or have been accused of being DB Cooper by long time, well-meaning investigators who are each “quite sure” they have identified the real DB Cooper.
- BoardsOfCanada 3y agoVery persuasive article
- janoc 3y agoThat's a classic The Sun article - lots of sensationalist BS and no relevant information. DB Cooper's identity is most likely known already. Judge for yourself, the evidence is all laid out there, including the interview with his children and pretty damning evidence on the cops that were investigating the case. - freitasm 3y agoA "mysterious" metal that happened to be used in the making of the same aeroplane DB Cooper was flying on? Why does it sound like there is nothing to see here?
- cbsmith 3y agoYeah, it's hard to imagine how "aerospace materials" might be found on the person who was last seen on a plane.
