Well the mainframes never went away. I know a guy - he's now retired but i knew him since 15 years back when he was very active in development - who was a mainframe programmer in banking all his career - and he is the happiest developer i knew. In that industry, the entire stack is coherent and stable, and exists to get things done, not to confuse or bullshit people into infinite rewriting into next shiny framework. There's always a budget to get things done properly, clients know what can be done and what can't. Everything is conservative and things really get delivered, and work in production, in time and on budget, and that ecosystem appears to select people who are able and willing to work that way, not "move fast and break things". And, he retired rich, never doing anything but actual coding for money.
But of course, i could never break into things like that because it's not built with people with ADHD and no formal educational credentials in mind, to say the least. That's real business, not hippie hackspace.
