- lukasb 3y agoNot exactly: "As industries moved in, its once-overwhelmingly white population began shrinking. Today more than 70% of residents identify as Hispanic. The poverty rate has risen from 15% in 2005 to nearly 21%. Almost a quarter of the population doesn’t have health insurance."

- 1letterunixname 3y agoReplace "Houston" with "Texas" and there is zero surprise. Houston's residential sprawl into hurricane flood sacrifice zones and near industrial plants that blow up with regular frequency is the consequence of extreme Laissez-faire, malignant neglect libertarian utopian policies that let homes be built anywhere.
- andrewstuart 3y agoReminds me there was a big Benzene fire in Melbourne I wonder what happened with that.
- Jimmc414 3y agoThe polluter that caused this situation has 2 to 10 employee and specializes in "Chemical Distribution, Disaster Response, Total Environmental Solutions" https://www.linkedin.com/company/k-solv-group/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/k-solv-group/ They are an oil spill response company. These chemicals that are leaking are normally sprayed in marine habitat to disperse oil spills.
- stevenwoo 3y agoI-10 going east from Houston to Louisiana has stretches with miles and miles of refineries, that this one company is responsible for the vast majority of benzene released in the area is mind boggling.

- bob1029 3y agoI can sometimes smell this from my house (about 50 miles away) when the wind blows just right. No many in the Houston area seem to think twice about this stuff. You will see endearing remarks about it in news and social most of the time. Very rarely is the local attention negative in tone. Some days when I drive downtown it's like a chemical river flowing across the freeway. A few miles of "let's keep the windows up" before you make it across.
