We Spied on Our Teenage Daughter with a Hidden Camera. Now What Do We Do?
- ClassyJacket 3y agoTurn yourselves in to the police, maybe?
- jprd 3y agoRight? I sometimes think these questions are made up, and then I inevitably have to encounter another human who validates that behavior like this is real, and not just in works of fiction. The sheer lack of self-awareness is shocking on its own.
- kelseyfrog 3y agoAfter telling her, getting a therapist would be the bare minimum.

Oh so you just don't understand what words mean. If you are trying to trust your child, that usually means taking the risk that your child is a shit heal or utterly stupid and does something wrong or bad. If they reach out to you for help with such bad things, even better!
- cwillu 3y agoIt's honestly shocking how often I need to remind myself that some people that I will interact with in this world, see the world that way: that the import of an act lies with how it will be seen by the affected party, rather than how it will affect that party or how that party would think of it if they knew all the details they would find relevant. Edit to add quote: “A few years ago, we gave our daughter, now 18, a stuffed bear for her birthday. At the time, we had recently discovered she had a boyfriend whom she was hiding from us. It was quite a shock. We wanted to be able to keep a closer eye on what she was doing without breaking her trust, so we installed a hidden camera inside the eye of the stuffed bear. Our daughter is now in college, and we overheard her telling her roommate how grateful she was for our trust in her and our support. We have been racked with guilt ever since. How can we tell our daughter about the camera without destroying our relationship with her? Should we tell her at all?” At least they have guilt once they find out they've gotten away with it. They really need to acknowledge that the relationship is already broken (“destroyed” is going too far), regardless of whether their daughter knows yet.

- nitwit005 3y agoPrivacy issues aside, you can easily create video that is a felony to possess this way. Not the best plan.
- vik0 3y agoHow do these people live with themselves? What did they think before doing this? Do they think at all?

- washadjeffmad 3y agoThis is a tech forum, and no one yet has asked how a stuffed bear with a camera in its eye is being powered or retains wireless connectivity while she's at college. If this wasn't creative fiction, I'd say the first sign that these parents never had anything to worry about would have been that their daughter either didn't notice or wasn't concerned that her beloved rechargeable teddy bear was stuffed with electronics.
- joegibbs 3y agoI think that concept is taken from Wolf of Wall Street, where one of Jordan's cameras in his daughter's room is a teddy bear with a camera in its eye.
