3M, DuPont Defeat Class Action over Forever Chemicals
- hodadawod 3y agoIf you have enough money and power, you can essentially do whatever you want.
- alexfromapex 3y agoWell this is extremely concerning
- dehrmann 3y agoI don't have enough information to really say if it's the right call, but the judge's verdict that including all Ohio residents in the class and the named plaintiff not actually tying harm to the defendants sounds reasonable. That doesn't mean a better case can't continue later.
- SpicyLemonZest 3y agoThe article notes that these companies have paid billions already in some of those better cases.
- solarwindy 3y agoAh, so if the pollution is widespread enough, it’s impossible to trace the blood-borne PFAS of the plaintiff directly to the defendants. Good job PFAS is everywhere now.
- sonicanatidae 3y agoYup. When you're a big enough asshole, they just let you do it.
- pipeline_peak 3y ago> Circuit Judge Raymond Kethledge, noting there are thousands of companies that have manufactured PFAS but just 10 listed as defendants in the case. Which companies invented those chemicals and introduced them to the world?
- refurb 3y agoBy that logic we should prosecute the inventor of programming languages that are used in hacking.
- jdiff 3y agoSilly analogy. PFAS are a toxic but useful tool. Programming languages are a useful tool that can be used for good and evil. Every use of PFAS carries its toxicity.
- rowanG077 3y agoThis is not true. PFAS could be limited to industrial use which theoretically can be done safely. In fact there are many toxic chemicals that are safely used everyday with the right precautions.
- jdiff 3y agoSure, there's some hypothetical world out there in the multiverse where it's not true. We live in this one, though, where they were used flippantly despite knowing the risks and where the genie is out of the bottle. PFAS are everywhere and they are not being used with care.
- rowanG077 3y agoI simply disagree with the statement: "this tool is dangerous so we don't use it". We abused PFAS, that doesn't mean it should be banned wholesale. We just need to ensure we safely use it, just like hundreds of other dangerous tools humanity uses every day.
- throwaway290 3y ago> lead plaintiff Kevin Hardwick <...> had not shown per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, found in his body could be traced directly to the defendants such as units of 3M, DuPont and others. Is this a cruel joke? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per-_and_polyfluoroalkyl_substances#Corporate_and_federal_government_suppression_of_information https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per-_and_polyfluoroalkyl_subst...
