My counter: Altman is correctly aware that the the hyper capitalist path is the most probable path to creating an AGI, as the amount of capital/investment for the compute/architecture will be massive. Vertically integrating with hardware seems very logical to solve a technical problem as big as AGI. The entire charter becomes moot without AGI and the current path of relying on outside funding (Microsoft) and suppliers (nvidia) only makes their overall mission more difficult.
- charlie0 3y agoTheir current model allows for hypercapitalism with constraints and has been successful. They still raised billions. Remains to be confirmed what happened behind the scenes, but it possible Sam wasn't honest with these dealings. The correct way to have gone about this was to setup that hardware co under the the same umbrella as OpenAI co. Sam is playing 3d chess here and the board has to fold or make their play, even if their hand isn't great.
