We used to leave a tip for good service. Now you have to do it for everything
- whatamidoingyo 3y agoWhy are paywalled posts allowed on HN? Is there a valid reason? Maybe this is why people don't actually read articles, just the title. Why click on links if you're going to be forced to pay?
- turtleyacht 3y agoI've been advised disabling Javascript can sometimes show the whole thing. And, for an archive link to show up as a comment, the original link needs to first be submitted. Some paywalled sites summarize the article at the beginning. Others load after scrolling, so I try to speed read whatever my eyes can grab, often reloading. It's almost a game.
- whatamidoingyo 3y agoYou can also use uBlock origin to "zap" the overlay prompt for payment (although you need to enable advanced settings for this). You can also just refresh the page with the network tab opened in dev tools. Look at the first request, click it, then check the "preview" tab. There are lots of workarounds, but it's not always worth it. I just want to scroll an article to see how long it is and if it looks like it's going to be worth the read. It's an inconvenience when this happens, for sure.

- JohnFen 3y agoI am harangued at every turn to tip for nonsense crap, but I don't have to do it. And I don't anymore for the most part -- I'll tip for the more traditional things (sit down restaurants, etc.), but only if nobody prompts me to. Tipping culture has gone completely off the rails and must end.
