What about all the potential New Yorks that are currently too cold to live in but could be thriving cities if they were just warmer?
More humans die every year of cold than of heat. Just due to the asymmetry of the numbers, there's a good chance that global temp increases will actually save lives, a fact that is rarely mentioned by articles like this.
- it_citizen 3y agoGlobal temperature increase doesn't mean it gets warmer everywhere and anytime. Weather will just become more extreme and there is a good chance that more people will die from harsher winters too.
- api 3y ago"Increased cumulative atmospheric energy" is better but less catchy than global warming. It can manifest as either temperature or kinetic energy.
- mrguyorama 3y ago"Climate Chaos" should be the term.
- pdonis 3y ago> Global temperature increase doesn't mean it gets warmer everywhere and anytime. It does mean that the poles warm more than the tropics--in other words, extreme cold decreases by more than extreme heat increases. > Weather will just become more extreme There is no data showing that extreme weather events are becoming more common with climate change. The cost of such events is going up, but that's because there is a lot more valuable property in areas where the events happen. > there is a good chance that more people will die from harsher winters too. No, there isn't. There is no data showing this and no models predict it.
- lispisok 3y agoYou can make just about any claim and say "because climate change" and people will believe it
- esafak 3y agoWhy should they; are people in overheated climates going to be given haven in the newly livable ones in other countries? They are not, so it is irrelevant.

- hh3k0 3y ago> What about all the potential New Yorks that are currently too cold to live in but could be thriving cities if they were just warmer? That’s easy: those New Yorks will release hundreds of years worth of greenhouse gases when they plow the newly ice-free soil around them.
- maxhille 3y agoThe scientists in this matter also try to calculate mitigation costs - where this would fall into. Also other mega engineering like eg. big North Sea dam. The result in the end is simple: It will be cheaper in the long run to mitigate the cause than the effects.
- aeternum 3y agoThe same argument was made for Eugenics. Less human suffering if we sterilize people now vs. let them starve later. Turns out all it took to solve food production was inventing a process to extra Nitrogen from the air. Even scientists are notoriously bad at predicting future tech breakthroughs.
- worik 3y ago> More humans die every year of cold than of heat What makes you think that?
