The Mediterranean Iron Omni-Spear
- omneity 3y agoThis meta-analysis is insightful, but I found it peculiar to find no mention of southern Mediterranean designs. The German as well as Persian mention is even more peculiar since it can be argued whether the Mediterranean sphere included Germany or Persia before the Roman victories, which happened at a relatively late phase of the Iron age. Egyptian and Phoenician/Carthaginian would have been a nice addition for a more comprehensive omni-view on the omni-spear.
- jltsiren 3y agoAncient Persia, which usually means the Achaemenid Empire, was Mediterranean from the beginning. Cyrus the Great established the empire when he revolted against the Median Empire in 553 BC. When he died in 530 BC, his empire covered most of present-day Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel.
- the_gipsy 3y agoNote that hoja literally means "sheet", just like the German Blatt.
- causality0 3y agoI'm a huge fan of A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry but Bret, please do away with the floating theme-changer button that blocks the bottom paragraph. It's particularly bad for those of us reading in landscape and nobody is changing their theme so often they need the shortcut onscreen at all times.
- LargoLasskhyfv 3y agoWhat button...? Uh, this... Hm, black on grey? Hey! It's blocking nothing here, by the way. Because Desktop, as is fitting for site like that ;-)
- yjftsjthsd-h 3y ago> It's blocking nothing here, by the way. It doesn't block anything here on my phone either, and I'm surprised that it would since the comments should provide a buffer. > Because Desktop, as is fitting for site like that ;-) Er, what makes an archeology blog post more suited to reading on one screen instead of another?
- causality0 3y agoThis is what it looks like on my phone. It's the same on Chrome, Vivaldi, and Firefox Mobile. https://i.imgur.com/0ErpXFw.jpg https://i.imgur.com/0ErpXFw.jpg
- yjftsjthsd-h 3y agoIt looks basically like that here, but can't you just scroll down? Especially with a vertical screen it seems like a fairly minor issue
- LargoLasskhyfv 3y agoStyle.
- spookie 3y agoGreat! But try to use regional demonyms instead of nonexistent countries (at the time). i.e. "Iberians" instead of "Spanish"
