Microsoft won't let you close OneDrive on Windows until you explain yourself
- data_monkey 3y agoThe buzzword bingo management "Deliver on a integrated streamlined customer experience with inline analytics to deliver sharedholder value" culture strikes again.
- pxeger1 3y agoI’ve noticed the Office and OneDrive web apps now make it subtly harder to download your files. All part of their lockin strategy I suppose.
- woleium 3y agoMost first year university courses have to teach students how to use files and folders, it’s just not that well known anymore
- codeful 3y agoI am speculating that only a fraction of users explicitly shut down a program that appears beasides the clock. Is it truly worth irritating that segment of users? I am one of those who occasionally turns off OneDrive. However, the idea of starting to look for alternatives has only just struck me. I'm really tired of waves of popups everywhere.
- Justsignedup 3y agoEvery 3 months MS "updates" windows by prompting me to enable edge, buy/try office, enable one drive, etc. And every button for no is in a different location.
- WarOnPrivacy 3y agoToday I had the Bing Search bar appear on the desktop, without Edge ever having been run (new 10 pro install). Previously it always appeared after the initial Edge launch + non-consensual Edge setup ordeal.
- uxp 3y agoMy mother in law works for a company that allows her to work from home from a personal device running Chrome. Several times a year I get a phone call at 6:30AM from her asking to quickly drive to her house before her shift starts at 7 to fix her computer, because "something happened" or "I was hacked". Every time, it's been an update which has reset her default apps so email opens in the newish Mail app and not Outlook or Gmail-in-Chrome, or changes the browser to Edge from Chrome. I'm not a systems administrator, so I havent a clue on what the magical incantations of registry paths and values should be which prevent this despite trying. Obviously if this was a domain managed asset at a company, someone would know how to prevent this. As a "home device", it feels like you're automatically enrolled in the "Global Microsoft domain", and subject to the whims of a product manager making IT decisions.
- theknocker 3y agoOne monopoly continues to single-handedly shit on personal computing for the whole species.
- jprd 3y agoI'd wager that all tech monopolies do this
- Solim 3y agoSame as restarting a server. It is something that should be running all the time so turning it off points to something not working, and asking for a valid reason makes sense.
- JohnFen 3y ago> asking for a valid reason makes sense. Only if you're trying to annoy your users as much as possible. Especially for something like a server, where presumably if the operator thinks Microsoft's help is required, they'll ask for it.
- McAtNite 3y agoThis line of thinking only makes sense if you actively use OneDrive. If you don’t and have no interest in using it why leave it running? It’s bad enough that they automatically bundle it into Windows, but intrusively forcing a user to explain why they are using their own hardware in a certain way is silly. I’m going to guess that the intersection of people who actively close unneeded background programs, and the users who are willing to explore alternatives overlaps quite a bit. This seems like a really shortsighted decision on Microsoft’s part.
- SoftTalker 3y agoIs it even possible to run Windows anymore without a Microsoft account? If you only have a local account, OneDrive has nothing to sync to, right?
- McAtNite 3y agoI’ve seen some guides in arduous ways to get around the Microsoft Account requirement, but I can’t say from experience. I abandoned Windows when the hardware requirements meant I couldn’t upgrade my personal computer to Win11.
- WarOnPrivacy 3y ago> Is it even possible to run Windows anymore without a Microsoft account? Sure. On Pro you choose Organization/Domain setup and create the local account. Home is harder and the process keeps shifting. There are guides. > If you only have a local account, OneDrive has nothing to sync to, right? Mostly correct except if you have a local account and an MS login for Store/Office/etc. It isn't syncing automatically (so far) but could be triggered accidentally. Another first today. I saw a dot next to my username (Start->username) that was naggy notification to MS Account myself.
- vel0city 3y ago> Hopefully, Microsoft won’t start injecting a poll at shutdown demanding to know why I’m turning my PC off for the day. Clearly they've never used Windows Server.
- baal80spam 3y agoOh god, I remember...
- laxd 3y agoThat's event tracking for system logs. Serious bizness feature. You could turn it of in group policy.
- HelixEndeavor 3y agoThis. Important distinction between "the company wants to know everything that happens to the server" and "Microsoft wants to know why you don't want their bloated adware running 24/7"
- Someone1234 3y agoThat prompt has saved me from an accidental shutdown more times than I'd care to admit. In some cases we didn't have offline management/VM console to trivially turn it back on.
- breadwinner 3y agoStrange that data corruption [1] is not offered as one of the options :) [1] https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/onedrive-corrupted-files/181006dd-6c36-483a-aca3-a2b8308f971a https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/onedr...
- projektfu 3y agoWow.... Also love the typical clueless response from the forum agent.
- DaiPlusPlus 3y agoI haven't even clicked the link above yet, but I just know it's a green checkmarked Accepted answer post from a v-dash MSFT contractor, asking the OP to run `sfc /scannow`, and somehow "2+ people found this post helpful", while below it is a collapsed post with "2,536+ people found this post helpful" votes criticising the state of the MS Answers community. ...right? UPDATE: I read the thread, and was even more disappointed: none of the official responses even acknowledged the entirety of the problem and callously disregarded important points like OneDrive for Business vs. Personal, the hard evidence of corruption, and MS' twisted messaging on backups for OneDrive...
- maxerickson 3y agoThe top reply sort of acknowledges home vs business (by noting that version history is intact there).
- DaiPlusPlus 3y agoRight, I meant to say they didn't acknowledge the non-Business users would be screwed.
- nottheengineer 3y agoThat happened to me multiple times at work. I genuinely thought I was going mad before I found out that that's just a thing onedrive does.
- tux3 3y agoThe newer versions of Windows seem to care less and less about what the user prefers. This is emblematic in the message boxes that offer a choice between Yes and Not Now/Maybe Later. It takes real effort to make Windows accept a No.
- Sharlin 3y agoWindows 7 (Pro/Ultimate) will probably remain the least bad Windows ever released. Shame.
- quantified 3y agoWhen it's as good as it can be, any change makes it worse.
- transcriptase 3y agoPrecisely why I’m on a Windows 10 install that hasn’t been updated in nearly 2 years. “yes but those updates contain security patches!” If three letter agencies or foreign state sponsored hackers want my Baldur’s Gate 3 save files that bad, they can have them. Otherwise I’m not installing Linkin_Park_Numb.mp3.exe or raw dogging Russian URLs in my spam folder so it’s tough to care. Bitdefender tells me when something tries to send a packet or if a exe changes.
- pxmpxm 3y agoAll the CVE bros just fainted reading this
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- bobmaxup 3y ago> If three letter agencies or foreign state sponsored hackers want my Baldur’s Gate 3 save files that bad, they can have them. > Otherwise I’m not installing Linkin_Park_Numb.mp3.exe or raw dogging Russian URLs in my spam folder so it’s tough to care. I doubt you are, but you may be unaware how many online games have vulnerabilities. There are many avenues to malware.
- projektfu 3y agoI wish I could understand why product managers come up with these ideas and developers implement them. Every release, Microsoft improves Windows in one way (like WSL) and then adds two reasons why it should be uninstalled completely. I use OneDrive on certain computers in my business. In others, it's inappropriate. On all my business computers, Xbox, Candy Crush, MSN etc. are inappropriate. And Edge was great for a while until it became the preferred route to feed me clickbait and more annoying pop-up ads. Why chase your users away?
- nullindividual 3y ago> I wish I could understand why product managers come up with these ideas and developers implement them. To become Senior Product Managers. You can't advance your career without putting your mark on the product.
- AnimalMuppet 3y agoIsn't that supposed to be a positive mark? "Yeah, he ruined the product, let's promote him to Senior Product Manager" is not a thing that people say very often.
- waynesonfire 3y agoThe next guy that reverts the feature gets the promotion. And so the wheel turns.
- projektfu 3y agoI get it, there's usually another metric that's at fault. Increasing Edge browser use by underhanded techniques on every install is easier than convincing users to install it. Boosting MSN hits by having a hundred million computers constantly downloading content is easier than making content people share. But the net result is going to be more of us opting out. It's a real Yahoo approach.
- namlem 3y ago
- JohnFen 3y agoI've been trying to get rid of OneDrive for months now, but I haven't been successful. It's yet another thing that makes me really hate Microsoft products.
- TalEs 3y agoLook into Windows debloating tools. I use Atlas OS which debloat Windows after a fresh install. There is also XToolBox, Chris Titus's Windows Utility, Win10ShutUp and many more, that let you pick and choose what to remove. It's great for privacy and also gets rid of Microsoft's annoying "features".
- WarOnPrivacy 3y agoWhat happens when you go thru the uninstall process? I've uninstalled OD on 100+ systems. It's always followed the pattern of other crapware; it goes away until the next major update.
- JohnFen 3y agoIt's been a while since I gave up on it, so I don't remember clearly. But I think it gets reinstalled within a couple of days. It's probably because of some idiotic policy my employer implements, now that I think of it. It's still incredibly annoying, though. It's not something that brings benefit to me, so it's not something I ever use.
- Nathanba 3y agoI've uninstalled the xbox uwp apps and various built in apps many times and they keep coming back, it is very annoying. Especially the xbox one because one time their xbox game bar thing popped up during a meeting while I was remote desktop sharing and I never play any games on that machine but hey, it showed up randomly anyway.
- bj-rn 3y agoUse IoT Enterprise LTSC. Comes without the bloat by default.
- jonathankoren 3y agoThis is just as annoying as Docker constantly asking me to rate it. This trend is just tacky.
- anothernewdude 3y agoSomething asks me to rate them, they get a 0
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- pseudo0 3y agoOr even worse the pattern of: "Are you enjoying <product>?" If yes: - prompted to submit 5 star review If no: - prompted to submit an internal feedback form
- mattgreenrocks 3y agoI really hate how needy apps are nowadays: “do you like me? Do you? Did you install the mobile app?” Do your job and shut up; you’re a program.
- timeon 3y agoClassic: website: This page is better in app! user: and who's fault is that?
- gumballindie 3y agoInstalling Linux distros these days is trivial, and i encourage anyone with a usb stick laying around to give them a try.
- supertrope 3y agoCortana and Candy Crush is why I use switched to Ubuntu on every PC except one. That one autostarts Steam.
- WarOnPrivacy 3y agoTo +Windows -Cortana reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search /v BingSearchEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search /v CortanaConsent /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
- gumballindie 3y agoI have to admit, I run windows on one machine for a bunch of non wine friendly apps. I al considering a linux phone too at some point. At least i installed windows offline, but my god is that os a fractal of stupidity. It’s like each time i turn it on there’s something dumb it tries doing. Last time 20gb of disk space just vanished, and i did nothing. Transferring data, pc to pc, over a 2.5gb/s network and 10gb/s cable runs at a whopping 80 megs. I disabled windows firewall because it’s a home network anyway and i dont care - i get a popup that i cant disable to turn it back on. Then there’s a bloody edge process running in the background though i am not using edge for anything! I cant alt tab without using the mouse…their window snapping feature is cool but if i try to snap a second window it “forgets” the proportions i used before. I cant find pcs on my own network all of a sudden! I have two partitions and i cant resize the first only the second. Not to mention I cant move program files to another partition. Oh and the installer wont even support my touchpad and wireless - which are of course natively supported by Linux. The list goes on and on and on. I cant blame their devs, i can see product management written all over these “features”.
- surgical_fire 3y agoI switched fully to Mint almost a year ago, and I second this. Using Linux nowadays is nothing like trying to use Linux 2 decades ago. Many common distros are easy to use and have intuitive, familiar interfaces. I haven't missed Windows a single time since making the switch.
- fidotron 3y agoDisappointed it doesn't show you a photo of the Product Manager responsible for OneDrive and make you answer them personally, like Jira went through a phase of doing. A totally missed opportunity. It should be the law that PMs have their faces on such things to promote the same trust we feel towards real estate agents. Privacy policy when signing up? The PM should be there, being responsible.
- zeroonetwothree 3y agoWouldn’t it be a lawyer typically responsible for the privacy policy?
- splitstud 3y ago[dead]
- MagnumOpus 3y agoIt doesn't need a privacy policy if it doesn't betray your privacy. And that is a PM decision.
- dessimus 3y agoThey should include a family photo and explain how the PM's kid(s) might not eat because of your selfish decisions, maybe include Sarah McLachlan doing a voiceover, too.
- ShamelessC 3y agoAnd the PM's address and personal cell number too! Make employees be highly available for any and all death threats. edit: sarcasm. Remind me not to use dark humor here.
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- pests 3y agoThere is this hilarious older guy on TikTok named OldCoderGuy who has a lot of on-brand humor. One of his gags is "Power Interrupt" which is software by Microsoft that allows your manager to forcefully put you into a video meeting at any time. Your joke just reminded me of that.

- nerdjon 3y agoMy decision to just stick with Windows 10 LTS version for gaming is reinforced as a good decision on a fairly regular basis at this point. My partner was on Windows 10 and was running into some issues with OneDrive. Apparently it just moved the entire user directory (or something like that) to OneDrive and most of his files were not local. We tried to disable OneDrive and his Desktop just disappeared. We finally just got rid of it, but it was a pain and I don't think he ever turned it on. At least not purposefully. Also please don't say to just use Proton and SteamOS for gaming. I have had enough issues with games not working under proton (Particularly if not from Steam) or updates breaking games on my Steam Deck that I also use Windows LTS on my Steam Deck most of the time now. Edit: I remember what the problem was. he ran out of space. So the service that he didn't sign up for (at least purposefully) that synced his entire home directory stopped syncing because he ran out of space on it, and his files are basically being held hostage by OneDrive.
- aligray 3y agoThis has happened to me and it’s causing me a lot of headaches. Haven’t found a solution yet as I’ve not had the energy to figure it out.
- nerdjon 3y agoI wish I could remember exactly what I found to help you. But if I remember correctly I found a script to remove OneDrive that would first download all of the files locally.
- HelixEndeavor 3y agoThis sounds nightmarish. One of many reasons I refuse to sign into my Outlook account on Windows, I just know they'll use the excuse of "integration" to completely fuck up my computer with cloud bullshit. I want what's on my computer to stay on my computer, dammit.
- aligray 3y ago
- low_tech_punk 3y agoNow they must add another option: "I quit OneDrive because of this dialog!"
- wave100 3y agoI've managed to avoid the Windows 11 "upgrade" so far by disabling my motherboard's TPM in its BIOS menu. Not sure what I'll do in 2025 when Windows 10 hits EOL.
- baal80spam 3y agoI suggest (if you really want/need to use Windows) to just use LTSC version.
- DoctorDabadedoo 3y agoLTSC in a consumer machine is for sure pirated, no? Not sure that is better than just sticking to windows 10 post EOL.
- HelixEndeavor 3y ago"pirated" yes but you can often source the install images direct from Microsoft and then use open source tools to crack the activation systems. Microsoft has kind of stopped policing piracy at the individual user level, you can even download Windows cracking tools off GitHub, a platform that Microsoft owns. As long as you're using their software it makes them happy. And LTSC is worth it to have a barebones no-bullshit Windows installation.
- DoctorDabadedoo 3y agoDidn't know you could get the base images directly from Microsoft, safe third party tools to validate the installation would still concern me, unfortunately.
- avery17 3y agoYou act like we don't all already have pirated copies of windows. Might as well get security updates.
- DoctorDabadedoo 3y ago
- kylec 3y agoAnd Microsoft wonders why I don't want to install Windows 11...
- blibble 3y agoprediction: next version will also make you watch an ad before being allowed to exit
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- JohnTHaller 3y agoDon't forget the big flashing "Backup" button that shows on Windows 11 23H2 prompting you to upload your files to OneDrive. I ditched OneDrive due to all of these annoyances.
- kettlecorn 3y agoBad taste is irreparably laced through Microsoft's culture. It's why I've stopped using their products. When I worked there the job of PMs, and many managers, seemed to be to figure out how to appear polite while attempting to distort common sense to get their metrics pumped up.
- Tommstein 3y agoMicrosoft has been a known quantity for a long time. At this point, anyone willingly subjecting themselves to their bullshit (as opposed to having it forced on them by work) has only themselves to blame.
- WarOnPrivacy 3y ago> At this point, anyone willingly subjecting themselves to their bullcrap (as opposed to having it forced on them by work) has only themselves to blame. Yeah. That and their employers, customer base, relatives, biz associates....
- Tommstein 3y ago> Yeah. That and their employers, customer base, relatives, biz associates.... You found a wealth of ways to repeat the word "work."
- WarOnPrivacy 3y agoIt could be joy.
- HelixEndeavor 3y agoSo is there a regedit you can do to disable OneDrive completely or does Microsoft worm their way around that as well. Honestly the only thing keeping me from updating from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is that the ads and forced behaviors are an order of magnitude greater in their shittiness.
- easton 3y agoThere’s a GPO for it, so yes, although I bet it’s one of those that doesn’t stick outside of Pro.
- zwieback 3y agoThe sad thing is that Windows can be lovely in the Enterprise, at least where I work it's virtually friction-free as everything is preconfigured and no annoying popus. For home use: different story. It feels like part of the whole trend of constant polling and setting tips at 18-30%.
- theropost 3y agoTime to regulate OS releases. Prove your new version is actually an upgrade, and increase user productivity first - not just forcing them into your regulatory captured product suite.
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- LorenDB 3y ago> What’s next? Hopefully, Microsoft won’t start injecting a poll at shutdown demanding to know why I’m turning my PC off for the day. Sounds like somebody never ran Windows Server.
- albert180 3y agoReasons why I switched to Linux Nr.436 (I switched when Windows 10 started injecting News in the Taskbar without asking after an Update)
- nathanaldensr 3y agoKPIs/OKRs run amok. Gross incentives shamelessly implemented by slavering product managers. Microsoft, you should be better than this.
- analognoise 3y agoI’ll never buy Windows ever again. Win10 was my last hurrah. I want to thank MS for things like Win32, gaming; I thought WSL was going to be a thing that allowed the best of both worlds and everything was going to be better. I was wrong, and it’s very clear I was wrong. It’s a shame really and kind of sad. It’s like your favorite hammer turning against you; a tool you’ve used for decades decides to self-immolate. Or maybe a hammer that you’ve used for decades and then started playing an ad and tracking your location every time you pick it up. Terrible.
- zx8080 3y agoOnedrive manager badly wants to reach his 2023 Q4 OKR. Help him! don't quit OneDrive.
- deafpolygon 3y agoLet's contrast that with iCloud - which cannot be turned off, even if you are not logged into the iCloud service.
- figassis 3y agoI think eventually a solid antitrust case will bring them back to earth, but I'm very glad I jumped off windows over a decade ago so I get to skip all the nonsense in between.
- EVa5I7bHFq9mnYK 3y agoJust run w10privacy once, it takes 5 minutes to remove onedrive, cortana, telemetry and every other windows cruft. Wish it was that easy for Android.
- lpcvoid 3y agoThis reminds me of that > please drink verification can Greentext. Why people put up with this crap in their lives is beyond me.
- gushie 3y ago"I've never signed into OneDrive but it is taking up 60GB of space in my AppData folder"
- M95D 3y agoI would still use WinXP if Firefox would work. I really don't need anything else.
- SergeAx 3y agoSince long before, there was a pattern to skipping "bad" versions of Windows in favor of "good" ones: install Windows 95, skip Windows 98, use Windows 2000, pass Windows ME, use Windows XP, skip Windows Vista, use Windows 7, abolish Windows 8. I dread the moment I am forced to switch from Windows 10 because they said there will be no Windows 12.
- dbalatero 3y agoIndustry obsession with data gone too far?
- donohoe 3y agoAnyone here work at Microsoft that can explain how anyone at the company thought this was a good idea? Seriously. I'm genuinely confused. MS never had the best UI (hello MS Word toolbars) but those happened over time through attrition and added features. This is one of many intentional user-hostile experiences.
- dbalatero 3y agoI'm sure some combination of incentives created this; I wonder which ones.
- thih9 3y agoMy bet is on both: - “Let’s make decisions based on metrics”, and - “Let’s gather even more metrics”. In any case it was not acting in the user’s best interest.
- _Algernon_ 3y ago- Let's make decisions based on this $PROXY_METRIC for $IMPORTANT_BUSINESS_METRIC. - People now have to paperclip-optimize $PROXY to get a promotion. - $PROXY becomes less and less reflecting of $IMPORTANT_BUSINESS_METRIC. Repeat ad nauseam.
- bonton89 3y agoI think you answered your own question with the admission that is one of many intentional user-hostile experiences. Most people put up with the other stuff so why would they stop?
- itslennysfault 3y agoI don't work at Microsoft (anymore) and never worked on this project, but I can pretty confidently say it went like this... Some exec: "Why are people quitting OneDrive?" Some PM: "I don't know." Some exec: "We should do an exit poll." ...time passes Some exec: "Why are people quittin OneDrive?" Some PM: "Those that answer say ____, but a lot of people don't answer the exit poll." Some exec: "We should force them to answer" Some PM: "Fine." /scene
- 38 3y agomaybe I am on an old version, but I dont get that at all. here is my info: OneDrive version: Build 23.214.1015.0001 (64-bit) if I try to close, I get: Are you sure you want to close OneDrive? If you close OneDrive, files in your OneDrive folder won't sync with your files online. [Close OneDrive][Cancel]
- bobo_legos 3y agoI am on 23.226... and I didn't get any questionnaire. I got the same message as you. I am on Win 11 Enterprise though. Maybe that makes a difference? Some times I wonder about these hyper ventilating posts about the latest stupid thing Microsoft changed. Their changes never seem to roll down to me.
- kstrauser 3y agoGot a Debian installer USB stick that says they're wrong.
- AlexandrB 3y agoCrazy stuff, and the logical endpoint to the kind of paternalistic UX design that has been fashionable for the last few years. RIP "bicycle for the mind", hello "fuzzy handcuffs for the mind".
- HenryBemis 3y ago"I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen."
- cmrdporcupine 3y ago"Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose any more. Good bye."
- geodel 3y agoIt seems magnanimity of MS that they are just asking to explain. Else they could force user to submit sound mental health certificate. After all who in right mind close OneDrive. Right?
- RajT88 3y agoThis deserves the "Windows 95 Tips and Tricks" treatment: https://windows95tips.com/ https://windows95tips.com/
- jve 3y agoProviding close reason is ridiculous. Don't think this would be technical guys at work, rather some marketing or someone who wants some stats. But nudging in direction/reminding of backups at appropriate times - I actually applaud it. Let people think about it for a while.
- password4321 3y agoEdge on first use after startup used to prompt for Microsoft login with an un-skippable modal pop-up, had to terminate the process and restart the app to bypass.
- crabmusket 3y agoThis is a great way to poison your data collection by forcing users to select an answer they may not mean, just to proceed.
- geraldhh 3y agothe business case for bad data over no data seems well established
- justinclift 3y agoNeeds a new option in the list "Fuck You Microsoft". :)
- aj7 3y agoBy the way, has anyone figured out how to show Google Drive as an option to save in Office365, without having to navigate through your hard drive?
- csdreamer7 3y agoTimes like this I am happy I am mostly Windows free with my work as a Linux kernel developer. Still need Windows for a few things. Like playing my GOG.com games. No, Heroic or Lutris do not work well. With the exception of playing the rebuilds of Diablo I. My next gaming machine will likely be Linux only if I ever get myself to finish the OG Baldur's Gate I and II. You can buy the Enhanced Edition on GOG and put in a support request to have the original added to your library. I bought the original when it came out on GOG. You may want to do that for mods or if you just prefer the original. edit: To clarify: I want to be able use GOG Galaxy for game syncing and convenience. That does not work well in my experience with Proton.
- belthesar 3y agoI'm earnestly surprised that the compatibility efforts GOG has went through on so many titles hasn't made playing most, if not all, of those old titles playable through WINE. So many of the old DirectDraw / legacy DirectX games have been made capable to play by translating to DirectX 9 that I would imagine WINE would work swimmingly in those cases. I imagine though that you've put in the legwork to try and get those to work though, so I trust your experience, but my surprise remains all the same.
- csdreamer7 3y agoFor older games it is a mixed bag. Outpost 2 is still mostly broken on Proton last I tried (it was also broken for a while on Windows 10 till GOG patched it up). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIdyqchnPuQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIdyqchnPuQ
- michaelmrose 3y agoProton works well and you can add non steam games to steam
- csdreamer7 3y agoTo clarify: I want to be able use GOG Galaxy for game syncing and convenience. That does not work well in my experience with Proton.
- Havoc 3y agoMS sure loves their user hostile ux choices
- Minor49er 3y agoThe article notes the items in the dropdown: Here are the options the app lets you pick: I do not want OneDrive running all the time I do not know what OneDrive is I do not use OneDrive I am trying to fix a problem with OneDrive I am trying to speed up my computer I get too many notifications Other Sadly, there is no "none of your business, let me quit" option. Actually, the "Other" option encompasses "none of your business, let me quit". Though it is still a UI nuisance
- 7734128 3y agoAre all options "valid" answers, or is it like trying to cancel a subscription with an American corporation where most options just lead to explanations of why the customer's opinion is incorrect?
- klyrs 3y agoThe self awareness behind "I get too many notifications" is titillating.
- Pathogen-David 3y agoSeriously. OneDrive is constantly trying to get me to do a Microsoft 365 Home trial even though I actively pay for Microsoft 365 Business and have it installed on all of my machines. And of course you can't disable the marketing notifications without also disabling the file conflict and storage limit warnings.
- kimixa 3y agoThe onedrive integration is one of the most annoying things about windows for me right now. Not just the constant nagging, nor the "Adverts" pasted over my computer, but one day I woke up and something had decided to move all my documents to a new "onedrive" folder, despite never signing up for anything. (Or at least "asked me" in some super easy to miss clickthrough) This naturally broke a stack of apps and scripts, and my expectations. And as explorer seems to do some magic to make it /look/ like everything is in the same place, but then causes inconsistency with other ways of accessing folders, breaks decades of learned experience on how the model of files and folders work. And this was still on windows 10 - at least if there's an upgrade migration you /expect/ some things to work a bit differently, and then have the option of not upgrading if that behavior is important. But what's the point of having "versions" if you just backport all the breaking changes anyway?
- lencastre 3y agoHave you tried shutup10?
- jtriangle 3y agoI prefer chris titus's windows script, automates the whole process.
- Barrin92 3y agoI would not recommend that script. On the default settings it messes with quite a few group policies which for example ends up preventing Visual Studio from installing dependencies. (i.e. InstallDefault, which prevents webview2 from being installed)
- kimixa 3y agoI think I tried something similar to wipe out the Edge and Onedrive nagware but it seemed to break windows update, so ended up reverting it.
- 3y ago
- the__alchemist 3y agoOneDrive will randomly hijack your Desktop, Downloads, Documents folders etc shortly after installing Windows. It's a pain to undo it. Errors, forced logins, lots of internet searches to find workarounds etc. One of the most annoying things about Windows RN.
- tremon 3y agoOne of the most annoying things about Windows RN That in itself is a huge accomplishment.
- arcosdev 3y agoGotta make my numbers, better use every dirty trick in the book before the inevitable performance review where every department in Microsoft goes at each other like a pack of rabid hyaenas. The desperation is rank.
- red_admiral 3y agoI am hoping that signing in with a local rather than a microsoft account still stops this - after all, onedrive won't have an "identity" to know where to store the files.
- unyttigfjelltol 3y agoWhat would be better is, when OneDrive unilaterally crashes without user input, or fails to start on boot, Microsoft answer one of those questionnaires for me: Microsoft closed OneDrive without user input, terminating all synchronization of shared files for the following reasons : ( ) Bad coding- error ( ) Updating unrelated application, sorry we didn't restart the application. ( ) Did we crash OneDrive?! Are you sure? ( ) We prefer that you use M365 online ( ) Other
- alistairSH 3y agoWhy is OneDrive a closable thing? Shouldn't it just run behind the scenes (assuming the user has opted-in)? iCloud mostly works like this - once you sign in and tell the system to sync files, it just works. There's no visible app to start or stop.
- dist-epoch 3y agoDropbox is also closable. Sometimes you might want to stop syncing for a while. Maybe you just copied a few gigabytes inside and you're not on the right network to let it upload.

- BrandoElFollito 3y agoCompletely unrelated, but this reminds me of a French bank that was amazed that they had so many customers that were farmers. Like almost all of them, despite being a bank present everywhere. It took them years to realize that part of the creation of a new account was the question about your work. Since the employees of the bank did not want to bother customers with these silly questions, they were picking the first one - agriculteur (farmer). You get the stats you deserve.

- pc2g4d 3y agoOne way to say "none of your business" is to abandon their OS. Did so at the beginning of the year and haven't looked back. (Linux Mint on workstation; Debian 12 on laptop; Proton via Steam for games) The more I hear about the direction Microsoft is headed with their desktop software, the more it feels like a good call.
- kokanee 3y agoAnyone else finding it ironic how difficult it is to interact with this article because it is so utterly plastered with ads? I attempted to follow the link to an article about Edge blocking Chrome, and was met with a full-screen interstitial ad instead of the article I clicked on. Sad times on the Internet.

- tsobral 3y agoIt looks like windows is just a store for Microsoft products nowadays. While having the majority of the OEM devices with windows, MS are really pushing their services and subscriptions on the users. And they do it the M$ way,the most annoying and mischievous way. Personally, I have one laptop with Win11 pro, for playing a couple of games. The pro edition should be for professionals, right? Nope, it's the same annoying and intrusive experience as the home edition. Screw it. I have other laptop with Pop_OS, a world of difference. My work laptop has Mac OS, and I'm really surprised how apple is so much less intrusive and annoying than Microsoft. Don't have an Apple ID? No problem, you can use your PC, we are not asking/begging every 3 days to create one. You aren't using any apple apps? Sure, you can install and use what you want, we will not cry and appeal to your emotional side. Wait? You installing Google chrome? Go ahead, just install like another app. Just change the default browser, with no questions, just 2 clicks. That simple. Windows looks like the android version of Chinese brands, full of ads and preloaded with bloatware, really.
- prepend 3y agoThey know the reason “it pegged my cpu and blocked out other processes.” OneDrive is the worst background process I’ve ever run and at least once a day, I have to kill the process because it’s maxing my cpus. Over something stupid like syncing a random file that hasn’t been opened or changed in a year. It’s curious how bad it is.
- AraceliHarker 3y agoWhether it's Windows Insider or the recent OneDrive debacle, Microsoft solicits user feedback with a fervor that belies its fundamental indifference. It's a charade, and it's a waste of time to participate.
- ivanjermakov 3y agoWindows is constantly reminding me why I moved to Linux and never looked back. Just yesterday I was fascinated by the Bing bar adware in the DirectX installer[1] which is not even working in Win10 [2].
