- overstay8930 3y agoI never understood why people pay so much for Datadog, seems like such a weird business model where people use it only because it's convenient but after implementing Datadog their only goal is to use it as a stop gap before they use something cheaper (i.e. Cloudwatch)
- api 3y ago"This is convenient we'll use this as a stopgap..." ... "How do we get away from this thing?!? It costs more than our entire cloud environment, but compliance and marketing both require access to these logs!"
- smrtinsert 3y agoDatadog can trace and group seemingly any kind of app and data flow into seemingly any type of alert or dashboard configuration you can think of and many you can't. It is shockingly useful in a complex system. If you have a monolith, you don't need it, full stop. It's just become the default choice because you need modern observability and its a good bet from that perspective.

You can look at metrics, traces, logs all connected to each other and build out amazing reliable systems. You start getting so many metrics right out of the box, that alone makes it super useful to developers, product and business folks. Combine some RUM with it and all of a sudden, you can see pretty much everything happening with your services 24/7, in a way that suits your own needs. And all of this with seriously low latency to detection. It feels like a top quality service built by top notch engineers. Cloudwatch doesn't even come close. That said, I agree that Datadog is EXPENSIVE.
