This article seems to be stretching really hard to find any way to connect private equity with "bad things".
I found the "private companies are kind of like public companies pre-1929-stock-market-crash" take to be particularly incoherent.
There might be a good steel-man argument for "privately owned companies are bad", but this article doesn't look like it.
- deepsquirrelnet 3y agoI think the mistake is to assume that all private equity is bad. I’m sure there are good examples of what PE can do well. But for all of the consternation here about declining journalism quality, the things PE has done to local new sources is an abomination. If you’re not aware of the part they are playing, you owe yourself a bit of education.
- TehShrike 3y agoI'm open to that education, what do you recommend I read?
- deepsquirrelnet 3y agoI’ve been watching the saga for years since Alden took over the Denver Post, and their conglomerates bought the local newspapers in all directions from my town, eliminated the local offices and journalists and consolidated them into one office with a skeleton crew staff that no longer publishes much local content. But my emotionalism about that aside, I think this study does a really good job of explaining what’s going on: https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w29743/w29743.pdf https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w29743/w297...
