Bukele is more popular in some polls. Also not super popular on MSNBC.
- clipsy 3y agoWhy is that interesting?
- IceHegel 3y agoBecause he’s not popular at Harvard or the NYT.
- Nevermark 3y agoInteresting is a pretty generic attribute. Can you fill out any point you are making further?
- gigatexal 3y agoPopulist ideologes often are popular, for the subset of people that stand to benefit from their heavy handed policies. I’m not sure the Muslims that died under his blind eye or their families would vote for him. Modi is popular much in the same way the Taliban is popular and seen as having brought stability to Afghanistan as since they have been in power the violence and bombings etc have stopped. The only problem is it was the Taliban doing all the violence. Go figure.
- IceHegel 3y agodemocracy for me but not for thee
- gigatexal 3y agoActually the opposite. When the mob elects a leader and that leader goes on to harm you and your people your only recourse is to leave or stay and fight. Given how far gone India is politically and how short lifetimes are if I were an Indian and could leave I would - change won’t come fast enough in India for me to benefit from it. Maybe my kid’s kids could. But lucky me I was born in the US so I got that blue passport. I still feel for my Indian friends though. Also hilarious to hear the argument: “oh democratically elected so” that excuses everything they did or do because calling it out is to attack democracy. When that’s a false premise.
- IceHegel 3y ago> "mob elects a leader" That's just democracy. The mob and democracy are referring to same thing with different attitudes. > "Populist ideologes often are popular, for the subset of people that stand to benefit from their heavy handed policies." I think you may be suffering from a condition often found at ivy league schools and the NYT where Aristotle's forms of government are scrambled in favor of liberal oligarchy by calling: Monarchy -> Dictatorship Oligarchy -> Democracy Democracy -> Populism
- pauldenton 3y ago"Actually the opposite. When the mob elects a leader and that leader goes on to harm you and your people your only recourse is to leave or stay and fight." How would you apply this to Palestine electing Hamas?
