I don't understand where anyone is supposed to go if they literally left their home to travel to you? Perhaps there needs to be a concerted effort to invest in countries that produce the most migrants so those populations are incentivized to stay there. What's the alternative? Settlements in Antarctica? It is greening up.. It's a disgusting response to a humanitarian crisis to pretend it should be someone else's problem. I don't understand why elected leadership is so decidedly impotent and seemingly callous.
- throwaway920102 3y agoNYC has one of the largest homeless shelter systems in the world - over 100k people are housed by NYC at public expense - and the system is so at capacity due to migrants that they are simply being told to sleep on public sidewalks. It's not an exaggeration to say many migrant would have better luck attaining indoor shelter just flying off to Omaha Nebraska or wherever.
- nradov 3y agoA lot of those undocumented immigrants are coming from places like Venezuela. No amount of foreign investment can fix Venezuela because it would all be stolen by the corrupt and incompetent government currently in charge there. Unfortunately, the only real solution would be a violent revolution by the Venezuelan people to overthrow their oppressors and institute a multiparty democracy with a free market economy.
- kelipso 3y agoLol. Or the US could stop crippling sanctions against Venezuela. Which they did stop a few days ago after years if sanctions, so that's something.
- toomuchtodo 3y agoThe US could also fund a coup to overthrow the Venezuelan government. Perhaps not the best option, but an option. The CIA likely has a line item for such consulting engagements.
- nradov 3y agoAside from the refugee issue, Venezuela has become irrelevant. We no longer need their oil. The US government won't take the risk of instigating another coup with so little to gain.
