One-way plane tickets: NYC offers migrants free travel anywhere to move
- ImJamal 3y ago>Dispersing them across the nation and world harkens back to when the Democratic mayor ripped Republican governors in Texas and Florida for sending migrants from the southern border to liberal enclaves. But City Hall officials defend their effort as different because the migrants aren’t being coerced to leave. So it is fine when Eric Adams does it, but when others do the same thing it is wrong? What a hypocrite. Why doesn't the mayor live up to his promise: "New York City will remain a sanctuary city under an Adams administration"?
- koolba 3y ago> One-way plane tickets, even international ones, are cheaper than the cumulative daily, per-migrant cost that has risen to $394 this month from $363 in the city. I though that the $394 per day amount was a typo but apparently that's how much NYC is spending: https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/politics/2023/10/23/city-officials-provide-little-details-on-daily-migrant-spending https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/politics/2023/10/23/city-of... Easy to see how even the costs for an international flight get quickly recouped.
- bombcar 3y agoAwfully convenient that they know the amount, but can't break it down.
- quantified 3y agoProbably some large sum divided by the count of persons. Could be some patronage spend in there that remains constant regardless.
- LeafItAlone 3y agoI can look at my bank statement at the end of the month and give you an average cost per person in my household. But without spending considerable time going through expenses, I can’t tell you what the breakdown is.
- CSMastermind 3y agoNYC already started doing this with homeless people and got into a fight with Hawaii and others over it. https://nypost.com/2019/10/26/nyc-homeless-initiative-sends-people-across-us-without-telling-receiving-cities/ https://nypost.com/2019/10/26/nyc-homeless-initiative-sends-...
- lusus_naturae 3y agoI don't understand where anyone is supposed to go if they literally left their home to travel to you? Perhaps there needs to be a concerted effort to invest in countries that produce the most migrants so those populations are incentivized to stay there. What's the alternative? Settlements in Antarctica? It is greening up.. It's a disgusting response to a humanitarian crisis to pretend it should be someone else's problem. I don't understand why elected leadership is so decidedly impotent and seemingly callous.
- throwaway920102 3y agoNYC has one of the largest homeless shelter systems in the world - over 100k people are housed by NYC at public expense - and the system is so at capacity due to migrants that they are simply being told to sleep on public sidewalks. It's not an exaggeration to say many migrant would have better luck attaining indoor shelter just flying off to Omaha Nebraska or wherever.
- nradov 3y agoA lot of those undocumented immigrants are coming from places like Venezuela. No amount of foreign investment can fix Venezuela because it would all be stolen by the corrupt and incompetent government currently in charge there. Unfortunately, the only real solution would be a violent revolution by the Venezuelan people to overthrow their oppressors and institute a multiparty democracy with a free market economy.
- kelipso 3y agoLol. Or the US could stop crippling sanctions against Venezuela. Which they did stop a few days ago after years if sanctions, so that's something.
- toomuchtodo 3y agoThe US could also fund a coup to overthrow the Venezuelan government. Perhaps not the best option, but an option. The CIA likely has a line item for such consulting engagements.
- cafard 3y agoForty and more years ago, one heard of "Greyhound therapy". A city's social services office would cut difficult residents a bus ticket to any other destination in the US. So the concept isn't new.
- anon291 3y agoNow that this affects new York, it has become part of the national conversation. Think about that. If progressives took this problem seriously in the eight plus years leading up to trump, maybe the election would have been different.
