Ask HN: Would you buy 'JOI' from bladerunner if it existed?
i think it be pretty sick to have mostly for the voice commands like telling to play music for me or you can make it so they're painting in your room right be side you without interrupting you of course :DDDDDD
- HenryBemis 3y agoI assume this is a Blade Runner 2 thingie.. which I actively deny its existence, as the first (and ofc the only one) is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, so there was never a need to make another one. So your question is moot because there is no JOI in Blade Runner (the good - orthodox - 1!) :) But because I am "a generous god" ("300" reference), for the fans of Ryan Gosling, you can always watch his SNL - Papyrus skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVhlJNJopOQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVhlJNJopOQ
- anon115 3y agoidk bout that holographic stuff but i wonder if a 'joi' living and your desktop and still capturing those interaction intrinsics would still resonate with individuals.
- nicbou 3y agoI just watched Blade Runner 2049 - Spoiler alert - Joi tells Joe anything he wants to hear. Even the name she gives him is hard-coded. She is a product that is engineered this way. Eventually he realises that he's just another John. Her (2013) had a similar conclusion. A few days ago I tried those ChatGPT characters and they felt like a crude version of that. They tell you what you wanted to hear and feig interest in everything you say, without understanding any of it. It's really weird. To me, it feels insincere, like a salesperson or a tourist trap conman. You're not special; making you feel special is just part of their work. You are loved for what you are, but in this case what you are is a source of income. I wouldn't have Joi or an AI companion in general. A frictionless relationship based on a prompt is nothing like the real thing.
- anon115 3y agowhat if its transparent about it? that way you bond with it organically.
- nicbou 3y agoIt gives me the same feeling I get if someone is paid to (or trying to get paid by) being pleasant with me. An entity that's hard-wired to be unconditionally friendly is not the same as a real friendship.
- anon115 3y agohmm i get that. a website relative to this conversation popped up: https://www.epal.gg/ https://www.epal.gg/ pay someone to play video games wtih you. i know that weird feeling. the intrinsics of developing organic unconditional friendships and giving it to a bot is a tough engineering problem.
- reify 3y agoDefinite yes for me I am old, retired, nearly 70, and live alone. While I am a classic introvert and manage to occupy my needs without interacting with my fellow human beings. I do miss those heart warming daily exchanges that come from having people around. It would be fun to discuss and get feedback on my latest adventures developing a gluten free sourdough and growing oyster mushrooms or even getting a second opinion on some doubtful posts I upload.
- ilaksh 3y agoThere are some interesting Patreon projects that can take advantage of the Meta Quest 3 color passthrough. Would be feasible to build something like that attached to OpenAI or something. There are also models for generating facial movements from speech. I think it's feasible to build a very rough mixed reality version of this today.
- logicalmonster 3y agoDo you happen to have any JOI videos to explain this concept?
