The core is that we always represent time as space. In our mind, the past, present, and future are 3d or 2d relations. The week, a month, your lifespan all have some spatial "shape", or order at the least. I'm no expert, but I am pretty sure this is not Synesthesia like the article implies. "My" inner year is a counter-clockwise circle. But my week is a strip, even though week loops like years. My life is a downwards strip, I guess because I'll die someday. History itself is an upward strip, because time itself will never end (presumably).
