Stopbuyingdomainnames
- FBISurveillance 3y ago[flagged]
- rvz 3y agoGoing to keep buying even more cheap domains then.
- ge96 3y agoI do feel bad about unused domains I own. I now try to build something before buying, though I will confirm a domain doesn't resolve via browser call so hopefully it's available.
- diggan 3y agoI also used feel bad about my unused domains. So I started not renewing some, and now I feel bad about having the perfect use case for the ones I no longer own. Now I'll have the ones I own until the day I die.
- karaterobot 3y agoNever! Keep the faith, all those domain names will become a project someday.
- sosuke 3y agoI regret all the domain names I let go.
- arwhatever 3y agoI can’t figure out the meaning of the linked page, but the name is compelling. Would someone be willing to add a bit of explanation here?
- spencerflem 3y agoIt seems like somebody on twitter said that you should stop buying domain names, and the owner of this website wanted to troll them
- DistractionRect 3y agoFor those logged out of Twitter, you lose the context: https://nitter.net/0xFrancis/status/1633240872098643970 https://nitter.net/0xFrancis/status/1633240872098643970
- keiferski 3y agoThere has been a lot of discussion about Georgism lately, and this link just made me think: could Georgism effectively be applied to domain name squatting?
- dingosity 3y agoso... uh... you didn't register google.com fast enough and now you want to have a discussion about how it's really owned by everyone and google should be paying rent to you? i'm actually not trying to be a snot about this, it's just the extreme version of what i view geoism applied to domain names would end up as. if you had a link to an online discussion, that would be cool. probably out of scope for this post, but still sort of interesting.
- keiferski 3y agoWell, I'm no expert on Georgism, but the idea is that it incentivizes landowners to either sell or develop the land. So, for domain names, the idea would be similar: determine (in some way, to be determined) when a domain isn't being used, and then charge a fee that prevents squatting.
- xboxnolifes 3y agoA big part of Georgian is that land value can be impacted by nearby land development. Domains do not have nearby neighbors. At best, it gains some coincidental value by sharing a name with some shortlived fad. That being said, you wouldn't look for squatting and then charge a fee. You would evaluate every domain name and change a fee accordingly. Even non-squatted land can be underdeveloped.
- andrewstuart 3y agoI expected to be able to list my domain names for sale.
- moralestapia 3y agoNever! I have about 30 and counting, lol. One day they'll see the light of the day :D.
- alsetmusic 3y agoIt’s fun to look through the many domains that I’ve registered, often when drunk, for some project or other that never actually happened. So many silly (and funny, to me) ideas.
- NewJazz 3y agoWord of warning... You'd be wise to take some precautionary measures to protect the email reputation of your domains. https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/dns-records/protect-domains-without-email/ https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/dns-records/protect-...
- angst_ridden 3y agoGotta be careful with domain names! After one drunken binge in the 90s, I ended up maintaining andthehorseyourodeinon.com for years.
- dingosity 3y agoWe've been having fun at the office with the are-you-fucking-high.com domain a co-worker bought. I think the initial idea was to have a bunch of different documents off that domain with humorous notes about the different ways people can be stupid at work. But yeah... it started as a joke and now no one has time to add the HTML.
- init2null 3y agoIt needs proper hosting and scripting. There's nothing more convincing than a personalized message naming the target of the correction. Joke domains are always best when they're taken much too far.
- hollerith 3y agoWould it be wrong for me to flag this for wasting my time?
- dingosity 3y agoWouldItBeWrongForMeToFlagThisForWastingMyTime.Com
- DistractionRect 3y agoWouldItBeWrongForMeToFlagThisForWastingMyTi.me/?
- dingosity 3y agoThe domains just write themselves.
