After ChatGPT disruption, Stack Overflow lays off 28 percent of staff
- mouse_ 3y agoStackOverflow, how do I do X? SO: "You don't need to do X." ChatGPT, how do I do X? GPT: "Simply type 'import x' " SO will not be missed
- znpy 3y agoSO was also hideous also because mods were excessively zealous in futile things. They would edit your posts and replies, changing your tone, for unnecessary reasons.
- dirkt 3y agoAnd developer B inherits code from developer A who typed "import x", developer B curses and spends a few days implementing Y, which developer A should have done in the first place if he had listend to SO (and provided the context why he wanted to do X, which of course he didn't when asking the question).
- belter 3y agoOh the irony...ChatGPT training comes from StackOverflow...probably in a large percentage.
- cowsup 3y agoSometimes understanding the why of a particular asker helps provide a better answer. If someone comes in to a shop and says “I’m building a bicycle, where do you keep your bananas?” I’d be inclined to ask why. If they told me they wanted softer handlebars, I’d tell them what a horrible idea that is. The fact that ChatGPT can lead the blind towards their pre-conceived ideas isn’t necessarily a plus.
- guidedlight 3y agoI noticed over the past few months they seemed to be heavily promoting their “Stack Overflow for Teams” product. My guess is that hasn’t gone well.
- luckystarr 3y agoError in the article: you don't need to scrape StackOverflow. The data is licensed Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike anyways. Edit: and at least some time ago, they provided dumps.
- phonon 3y agoStill dumping... https://archive.org/details/stackexchange https://archive.org/details/stackexchange
- unsupp0rted 3y agoStackoverflow, how do I do x? SO: Closing because it’s already been asked and answered No it hasn’t. SO: you have been warned ChatGTP: here's how you do x. Ask me again fifteen different ways and I'll tell you again fifteen different ways.

- antman 3y agoI think SO could pivot towards a Q&A site that people can ask and offer only opinions about software issues rather than factual answers
