Not cool.
- yohannparis 3y agoThey recovered 5500 artifacts... I agree with you, but nowadays with technology they can rapidly to high resolution photography of the sites. Even in the sky with drones. Laser mapping of the site, etc. The goal is just to recover and map all artifacts and their position, cleaning, tagging and figuring out what are they can be done offsite.
- hnbad 3y agoI remeber when they dug up a part of Cologne, Germany, because they wanted to build underground parking and they hit something Roman and had to shut down the entire construction project for years. They ended up finding a massive archeological site and scrapped the entire construction project.
- acd10j 3y agoIf you read full article it is mentioned they got full 8 years, not 2 days.
- AlotOfReading 3y agoThat's the time since the first campaigns in the area under development if I understand it correctly, which is a very different thing. Large developments in archaeologically dense areas will often have multiple sites associated with them. I've seen e.g. hundreds associated with airport expansions. Back when I did rescue archeology, 2 days was a lot closer to the time spent on a specific site than 8 years. 1w-2mo is more typical, but the parts I can read don't make clear whether 2 days was the entire extent of the excavations, it's just a narrative entry point where they're rushing to finish before they leave.
- oh_sigh 3y agoNo, they've been there for a long time. It's just they're handing the site back over to the developers in two days. But - the good news - they're just building houses for people on this site. If, at some point in the future, we decide that looking at some old sherds of pottery and a wall is more important than housing - we can just tear the houses down and start digging again.
