Words You Can Mute on Twitter to Make Yourself Smarter (2022)
- Quinzel 3y agoIf you’re on X are you even smart?
- paulpauper 3y agoplenty of objectively high IQ people are active there...
- Quinzel 3y agoI honestly do not understand why. Especially now that Elon has basically raped the platform.
- smoldesu 3y agoYes, indeed. It is called X, where the transitory lands of the Lords of Twitter converge. In venturing north, the pilgrims discover the truth of the old words: "The network fades and the lords go without followers." When the social network is threatened, the notification bell tolls, unearthing the old Lords of Twitter from their graves... Elon, Patron of the Memes... Hollywood's Celebrity Legion, the Doom Scrollers... And the reclusive lord of the Profaned Platform, Eugen Rochko... Only, in truth... the Lords will abandon their handles... And the Lurkers will rise. Nameless, accursed User, unfit even to be followed. And so it is, that man seeketh platforms.
- PaulHoule 3y agoHigh IQ, Poor judgement.
- paulpauper 3y agoor not follow anyone or read anyone and just use twitter as a pulpit, which some users do
- PaulHoule 3y agoI have a similar but somewhat different list for Mastodon. I mute the names of most Republican politicians mainly because of the hate these people get (but not Nikki Haley.) "Fascist" and "Nazi" are muted. Certain political movements produce an endless torrent of angry toots so I just zap 'em.
- clipsy 3y agoAdd "Woke" and "Communist" and you might actually be on to something.
- PaulHoule 3y agoOn X, yes. On Mastodon, those people aren’t there. Instead of anti-vax conspiracists, you have people who wear two masks because the person next to them is not wearing one or think vaccines are some kind of sacrament. And a lot of good people, but even some of them occasionally boost something that they’d never say themselves. As a result of all that name calling myself I am a lot more careful in the language I use so I can be the change I want in the world. You haven’t heard me call a crypto enthusiast a “blockhead” in months and I no longer call the people who jumped ship from NFTs to ChatGPT “ignorant and indolent” but I do compare them to Mickey Mouse in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. I thought about putting a filter in YOShInOn (my agent, posts to a few sites including this one on my behalf) that would enforce that I write in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-Prime https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-Prime but when I tried writing E-Prime I discovered all kinds of constructions that were even worse than saying “A = B” (or “A = A” for that matter) I would like a filter for anger toots but asking ChatGPT to do it works about as well as asking a broom to clean up for you, I would need to collect 5000 angry tools and that’s exactly what I am trying to avoid. Such a system is going to learn that certain subjects are toxic and probably work a lot like the keyword filters do, Really I don’t want to read “I want to kiss Vivek Ramaswamy” any more than I want to read breathless coverage that a car rented by his campaign got crashed into at a rally and they don’t know if it was deliberate or not,
- rsynnott 3y agoAnd the most important word of all: “Substack”.
