I think the comparison with the old Burning Man is apt, but not since valley people have been flying in en masse and it seems more like a rich people playground. Never been to Burning Man, so take with a grain of salt. I've also not been to the CCC for around 7 or 8 years, so not sure how much the original counterculture spirit is still alive. "The Tribes of Burning Man" was a good read, but in stark contrast to everything I've read online for the last few years.
