- computerfriend 3y agoIf you have a problem with the US invading other countries, you should have a problem with Russia doing it too.

- TuringTourist 3y agoThe US actions in the past, and presently, have been abhorrent. As a US citizen I have no issue admitting this. I also have no issue also stating I think the invasion of Ukraine is an ongoing atrocity by Russia. I don't think you'll find a lot of people being caught in a gotcha when you ask about the US vs Russia as far as impinging on the freedoms of other countries without a right to do so. They will readily tell you that both are wrong.

- wsc981 3y ago> Only on HN is an invader morally comparable to the invaded. You seem to have a very myopic view on the conflict, there’s a whole history leading up to the events in which the West carries a big part of the blame. That said, I know whenever I post my views on this conflict I will get downvoted here (which I don’t mind). So in that regard it is certainly not true that the majority of HN supports my views on the conflict. Thus your “only on HN” statement misses the mark, I think.

- wsc981 3y ago> ... you invaded and are currently genociding citizens of a sovereign country. FYI: I am not Russian, don’t have any Russian family ties or ancestry or whatever. Born in The Netherlands and perhaps the earliest ancestors I know of were likely French Huguenots [0] that emigrated to The Netherlands to flee persecution in France. With that said I’d like to think of myself as having a balanced view on the conflict. ——— [0]: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huguenots https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huguenots
- Aeolun 3y ago> The west carries a big part of the blame I think the moment you say this you kind of lose the ability to say that you have a balanced view of the conflict. The west is often to blame (e.g. Iraq, Iran, Syria, Israel), but this is one of the few instances in which the west didn’t instigate anything. Pre-war Russia was a hair away (one different president) from being accepted by the international community.

NATO could have respected Russia’s views towards expanding to the east. USA has been warned time and time again this would cause a conflict at this point. Even USA state officials [0] warned against it. Yet NATO decided to ignore all warnings and keep expanding eastward until it became too close for comfort to the Russians. In a way quite similar to the Cuban missile crisis. ——— [0]: https://theconversation.com/ukraine-war-follows-decades-of-warnings-that-nato-expansion-into-eastern-europe-could-provoke-russia-177999 https://theconversation.com/ukraine-war-follows-decades-of-w...
