I worked mostly in closed source RDBMS so I do not have so much experience in those open ecosystems, my question is why MariaDB still a thing in a world with Postgres or MySQL?
- dylan604 3y agoWhy is MySQL still a thing in the world with MariaDB?
- talent_deprived 3y agoMySQL works well. I've never seen a reason to switch to MariaDB in my projects.
- jbverschoor 3y agoMariadb is available on Debian by default
- mst 3y agoI wouldn't switch because I don't think they're different enough to see a point, but unless there's a specific feature in MySQL but not MariaDB that I anticipate needing, I've been tending to default to MariaDB for new projects.
- dylan604 3y agoBecause some people have ethics and don’t like MySQL’s owners
- talent_deprived 3y agoWhen the day comes that Oracle (that database company) has less ethics than any almost other multi-billion dollar company, I'll buy a hat and eat it.
- marcosdumay 3y agoIt almost stopped being. But looks like some large players are intent on pushing MySQL with a lot of force.
- _cenw 3y agoOracle happened a year after Sun acquired MySQL and the original developers were a little bit unhappy about the license model change.
- wongarsu 3y agoMySQL is still a thing because of inertia. Back when projects like Wordpress or MediaWiki were started, MySQL was the only good free option (postgres had a reputation for being slow back then). As a consequence most of the PHP ecosystem is on MySQL. And despite not being hip in Silicon Valley, PHP makes up a massive portion of the internet. Also MySQL makes some different tradeoffs than other databases, and while some of those may eat your data they can also make MySQL the best choice in some situations. MariaDB is an attempt at a better, freer, faster fork of MySQL, viable as a drop-in replacement. That comes with all the expected drama around the MySQL/MariaDB choice and the companies behind them.
- jbverschoor 3y agoPg was already there, but like many tech.. MySQL was easier (run and go)
- 1500100900 3y agoIn a world where HA is key, PostgreSQL has nothing to offer.
- tetha 3y agoPatroni is a thing and working on removing the dependency on a DCS. Works like a charm at work.
