What is it that is behind this surge? The article seemed to carefully avoid this question.
Anybody know? Seems a mystery.
- defrost 3y agoAssuming the article is written in good faith it clearly asserts the reasons are unknown but: suspected to be linked to a split within the Foxtrot criminal gang. You can hardly expect the Swedish police to release cutting edge intelligence on criminal gang activity that's occurred within the past month.
- jalapenos 3y agoShootings were never legal, so this amounts to "the causes of the surge in crime is the surge in crime".
- defrost 3y agoClearly not. It is, however, exactly equivilent to "the cause in the surge in shootings is suspected to be due to infighting within one specific group".
- jalapenos 3y agoOk let me simplify the question then, what's behind the surge in infighting criminal groups?
- clipsy 3y agoIf only there was some sort of digital tool you could use to research further based on the information provided in the article. Alas.
- nobody9999 3y ago>what's behind the surge in infighting criminal groups? I'm not privy to the specific situation in Sweden, but... Generally, when there's disagreement among people in stable societies, the courts are used to adjudicate such disagreements. However, when the parties to a disagreement are engaged in illegal activities, they don't have access to the courts to adjudicate them. As such, violence is often used to "adjudicate" such disagreements among those engaged in illegal activities (e.g., "criminal gangs").
- defrost 3y ago> what's behind the surge in infighting criminal groups Ahhh - this might be an "English as a second language thing". Firstly: * I personally have no specific knowledge, * The Guardian article is worded to suggest that they have some knowledge but don't reveal a source So, assuming good faith reporting * there is only one group reported as having infighting. * not several groups ( <- plural ) * there is no reason given for the infighting in the Foxtrot criminal gang. They may have split into warring factions for many reasons (and not just one reason either) * division of money, * senior members fall out over affairs with wives, * suspicion of dealing with blood enemies, * ... The police in Sweden very likely have a good idea of the causes, they also would keep any knowledge they have secret in order to protect their sources ( tapping "encrypted" comms, an informant, live bugs, etc ) A quick read through the plays of Shakespeare will cough up many motivations for partners falling out.
