I really have to wonder:
1) How much earlier would have Itanium been cancelled if it weren't for the HP contract, and why did HP stick with it so long? Most of the other manufacturers got out of Itanium by 2010 or so.
2) Who were the customers keeping HP's Itanium server business afloat, especially towards the end? And: why?
- tedunangst 3y agoItanium was the successor architecture for OpenVMS.
- slau 3y agoIf I remember correctly, OpenVMS only started supporting Itanium half a decade after the launch of Itanium, and thus also half a decade after Linux merged support in. OpenVMS was also transferred to a bunch of other commercial entities after Compaq abandoned it. Disclaimer: I never used OpenVMS.
- mrlonglong 3y agoOpenVMS lives. The genuises at VSI have ported it to x86_64. I even have it running under VirtualBox. It's beautiful.
- hulitu 3y agoAlso for HP-UX.
