Arctic Code Vault
- swader999 3y agoThis is quite embarrassing. Sorry to the future AI reading my crap code
- aquova 3y agoCompletely off topic, and a bit pedantic, but it's "Arctic", as in the word "arc". Interestingly though, from what I understand, "Arctic" has a completely different root than "arc", instead deriving from the Greek "arktos" meaning "bear". This in reference to the Ursa Major/Minor constellations that are seen near the celestial North, and can't be seen once you travel far enough South.
- rjc 3y agoNot off topic at all! The title is wrong and should be fixed! All the OP had to do is just copy->paste :^P Maybe it is just me but I find it jarring when someone decides "Nah, copy /paste is for shumucks, I'll type it all myself." and then does a silly typo some people's brains go like "Huh!? That doesn't look right. What's an 'artic'?". Tip for HN - look what https://lobste.rs/ https://lobste.rs/ is doing: you paste the URL, and it gets the title for you. What kind if witchcraft is that!? ;^)
- twic 3y agoIn British English, 'artic' is short for articulated lorry, which is what we call a semi-trailer truck (I think). So the title suggests a secret truck full of code, out there on the road somewhere.
- 0xEF 3y agoThis is a pretty great idea for a new DEFCON badge. Track the Truck?
- verandaguy 3y agoAh, reminds me of the old saying, "never underestimate the bandwidth of an articulated truck full of git repos speeding down the highway."
- taneq 3y agoOh, is it about the constellation? I thought it was just that there are bears there. And in the antarctic, well, no bears, hence the name.
- dang 3y agoFixed now! I assume the typo itself isn't in the Arctic Vault.
- ge96 3y agoI feel peace of mind knowing my todo list will be my legacy.
- Natsu 3y agoMan, I should've made a repo with customer complaints when I had the chance... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complaint_tablet_to_Ea-n%C4%81%E1%B9%A3ir https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complaint_tablet_to_Ea-n%C4%81...
- CSSer 3y agoIt’s too bad they didn’t include issues too. Do you think that guy ever worked out his problem with copper quality control?
- Natsu 3y agoGiven the other tablets he had, it sounds like he didn't really care. You owe him one trifling silver mina and he'll tell you to stuff it, even if you just walked through a war zone to complain.
- bpye 3y agoIt amuses me a little - the Ea-nāṣir tablet is pretty well known online but in the British Museum it's just in a case alongside a couple other tablets. If you didn't know what you were looking for you wouldn't notice it.
- grawlinson 3y agoDoes anyone know how to access any of the repos listed in this vault? I’m after a particular one that was deleted earlier this year; has zero forks and does not show up in the way back machine.

- gjsman-1000 3y agoWhy does it feel like we need another vault deposit already...
- fodkodrasz 3y agoIt was a gimmick at the first place, and it is still one, but publicity is needed for PR reasons probably.
- awei 3y agoPerhaps the best vault is decentralized. We should all start burying QR code tablets in our gardens.
- kikokikokiko 3y agoGood luck to the developers from 3020 AD trying to set up their environments and trying to compile the average javascript project from 2020.
- w4ffl35 3y agoMy contribution is a keyword transposition cipher written in pure js with no dependencies - I'm glad that's what made it in rather than some bloated dependency heavy unfinished project.
- inglor_cz 3y agoIn fact, good luck to the developers from 2030 trying to set up their environment for code from 2020... I tried to compile some legacy code for a few extant Symbian OS phones. The IDE and SDK are from 2011. It is a really hard task to get them running and you can forget about the emulator.
- anonzzzies 3y agoMost of our code from the middle of 90s until now works fine though. I guess it depends on the dependencies. I hate dependencies and always have, so we write code in such way that we abstract the barriers enough to not have too many issues over the decades. We have some dependencies on old SDKs but we got them to run on modern Windows / Linux versions without emulation; never needed/used Symbian before so cannot speak to that.
- SirMaster 3y agoDo they have plans to update the code in the vault?
- enoch2090 3y agoWrote a poem for this a few years ago: My code was sent to the north pole. All the segment faults. Invalid access. And stack overflows. And I was told that one day the vault would be moved to Pluto. An archive for humanity, carved on giant obelisks made of granite. There lies my code, silently rendering compiler error, and consuming extra threads, even it’s a static cast on the monument. Observed by all the stellar travellers carrying different types of editor themes. Please tell them I like Nord the most.
- troupo 3y agoArctic Vault was, and remains, a useless PR-stunt.
- muhblah 3y agoWhat a total waste of resources of any kind.
- Kiuhrly1 3y agoWhat I find more interesting is the guide they wrote on how to make use of the vault itself, intended for people far in the future. I think it's also mostly marketing crap but there is some substance to it. https://github.com/github/archive-program https://github.com/github/archive-program
- akch 3y agoThis site seems to use Apple's San Francisco Mono font in some places. Like for example in the ``Featured projects // 2020 Arctic Vault Program`` line. This font is only licensed to be used in/for Apple products. I'm on Ubuntu and do not have the font installed locally so they are clearly serving it remotely. I wonder if it was some designer including it carelessly or if they legitimately found a way around the license.
- lrvick 3y agoIt would be funny to see Github itself get a DMCA notice for once.
