‘Modern cars are a privacy nightmare,’ the worst Mozilla’s seen
- mikece 3y agoThis is a dupe of something already on the front page.

- mceachen 3y ago@dang can you merge these? Also, both are just repost summaries of this source: https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/articles/its-official-cars-are-the-worst-product-category-we-have-ever-reviewed-for-privacy/ https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/article...

- nequo 3y agoThis is such a cheap shot. The browser is being worked on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_version_history#Firefox_102_through_114 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_version_history#Firefo...
- stalfosknight 3y agoWhy can't the UNIX philosophy be applied to companies too?
- pietro72ohboy 3y agoThe UNIX way is not a holy gospel; it’s a way of thinking that has worked relatively well for software. There’s no reason it should be blindly copied into everything else. Stop using the UNIX way as a hand-wavy solution to complex problems.
- dralley 3y agoThe report was not produced by "the company" it was produced by the Foundation. Defending privacy is 100% within the Mozilla Foundation's wheelhouse.
- npteljes 3y agoFor one, doing only one thing is a huge risk for the company. It's the business equivalent of putting all of the eggs in one basket. If that one thing gets out of balance in any way, the company is dead. So doing multiple things can basically be safer. Second thing: where do you see the application of the UNIX philosophy being actually useful and popular? It's not even popular in the *nix world - systemd, for one, breaks it in a big way, but is still wildly successful, maybe because it's doing many things, and it's doing them well. Another successful example is ZFS - top of its class, and it's many layers integrated to one. The power comes from the integration.
- gbersac 3y agoI'm using firefox as my main browser and I don't see any major issue. What would you like them to work on?
- LegitShady 3y agothe android app is mostly usable, but still crashes at least weekly, and every once in a while requires a restart.
- tetris11 3y agoTry Fennec from F-droid. No crashes in all the years I've used it.
- coder_san 3y agoThat's strange. I've never had it crash for me. How many tabs do you have open?
- LegitShady 3y agoIt doesn't crash because of tabs - worst case scenario it unloads some from memory. I think its something to do with ublock origin.
- ale42 3y agoIt's definitely not the same people who work on the browser. And given that not many other people are seemingly interested in analyzing this kind of privacy concerns, well, I personally prefer a few more bugs or missing features in Firefox, and some more public outreach about privacy issues.
- zagrebian 3y agoMozilla currently has around 750 employees that work on Firefox.
- dralley 3y agoThis is a report by the Mozilla Foundation. Defending privacy is 100% within their remit as an organization. It is unlikely that anyone working on Firefox contributed to this.
- ecf 3y agoDefending “privacy” while their entire company depends on money from Google. What a foundation.
- dralley 3y agoAs I've written before, I am so tired of HNers criticizing Mozilla for being dependent on Google while, also, * criticizing Mozilla for having profitable side projects, such as Mozilla VPN or Pocket that diversify their sources of revenue * criticizing Mozilla for even the most innocuous types of browser monetization, like the ad for the Disney movie about Red Pandas What exactly do you want them to do?
- bluecalm 3y agoLet's see how quick EU officials are to enforce and punish their own industry for those practices. GDPR is one thing but they don't even tell their customers what they are collecting and there is often no way to turn it off.
- jdjdjdjdjduuuu 3y agoCars are like cellphones when it comes to privacy... If you want some privacy, steal an old car and dump your phone
