Why a highly mutated coronavirus variant has scientists on alert
- joshka 3y agoBA.2.86 suggests that a floating point Co(vid)-Processor BA.2.87 is just around the corner.
- rossdavidh 3y agoTL;DR is that the answer to the question is, "because that's their job". And, you know, I'm very glad we have people whose job it is to do this, and I hope it's happening also for influenza and RSV and monkeypox and lots of other viruses. But unless you're just into virology, there's not much news here. From the article: “I don’t think anybody needs to be alarmed by this,” stresses Bloom. “The most likely scenario is that this variant fizzles out, and in a month, nobody other than people like me even remember that it existed.”
- User23 3y agoWhy did monkeypox drop out of the news like a lead balloon anyhow?
- bb88 3y agoIt's still around. NYTimes had an article last July. https://www.nytimes.com/article/monkeypox-virus-covid.html https://www.nytimes.com/article/monkeypox-virus-covid.html A more direct answer is in this article. https://www.kff.org/global-health-policy/issue-brief/mpox-one-year-later-where-is-the-u-s-today/ https://www.kff.org/global-health-policy/issue-brief/mpox-on... "After the deployment of vaccines and treatments last summer, coupled with growing awareness of the disease, cases began to decline and both the WHO and the U.S. government have since ended their emergency declarations or allowed them to expire. - cameldrv 3y agoCases went way down. Probably mostly because a large portion of the at risk population got vaccinated.
- imartin2k 3y agoJust read this https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailand-sees-surge-in-monkeypox-cases-majority-in-bangkok https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailand-sees-surge-in-...
- version_five 3y ago> And, you know, I'm very glad we have people whose job it is to do this Agreed 100% The problem is, it's going to get irresponsibly covered in the media and the covid hysterics are going to get wind of it and harm other people. Everyone's up in arms about "misinformation" when it's stuff they don't like, but covid fanaticism goes unchecked and is still ruining lives.
- cameldrv 3y agoHow are covid hysterics harming other people at this point?
- dekhn 3y agoThe long tail of alarmist COVID coverage is ... long. Note that while the article is fairly tempered, the title uses the words "highly" and "alert" intentionally. It's almost as if several journalism sites are still fully trying to sell fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
- vcg3rd 3y agoWhy? Easy. We're a few months from an election year.
- jochem9 3y agoSo you think Nature, the scientists and/or even some even more nefarious party are in cahoots with.. idk, politicians? to influence the elections by creating a new variant, creating noise around a new variant or simply spreading misinformation about a new variant?
- boffbowsh 3y agoAh yes I’m sure those scientists in Denmark and the UK will try to maximise coverage of this due to an election in some other country. Grow up.
