It's inflammatory, but this website is worse. There's some video playing of a stranger eating mustard skittles taking up the bottom quarter of the screen.

- moritzwarhier 3y agoReally, if people here wouldn't use ad blockers and desktop computers in the majority, noone would be discussing the article at all. It's not realistic to discuss UX while plastering your website with things like "mustard skittles hahaha" unless you want to deceive people and dumb them down.
- zer0zzz 3y agoSomehow AdGuard on mobile didn’t filter this horrible shit for me
- brucethemoose2 3y agoBromite didn't get it either. I think its a 1st party autoplay video?
- Ocean7585 3y agoBromite is at this point abandonware, try Cromite instead https://github.com/uazo/cromite https://github.com/uazo/cromite
- zer0zzz 3y agoWeird. How does it integrate Adblock? Do they do a native Adblock the way brave does?
- brucethemoose2 3y agoAwesome, thanks.
- bakugo 3y agoWow, I tried disabling ublock and it is pretty bad. There are exactly 0 words of the body of the article visible when first loading the page on a 1440p monitor, two thirds of the screen are ads...
- abhiminator 3y agoIt's almost like you're teleported into browsing a different, parallel (and a way worse) web with a shitty UX when you turn off your ad-blocker.
- psyclobe 3y agoThat’s funny I did not notice it when I read the article. Had to go back to check again; I think my mind just blurred it all out and let me focus on the tiny scrollable section where the story is.
- memefrog 3y agoWhy would you not have ublock origin installed?
- beej71 3y agoI do, but it doesn't stop this particular ad. It's an internal ad.
- memefrog 3y agoWell I don't see it, and I have ublock origin. That's the only thing that could be hiding it.
- disgruntledphd2 3y agoOr you're in a country where the ad isn't served.
- xcdzvyn 3y agoI'm on mobile.
- tigrezno 3y agoFirefox on mobile has ublock origin available too
- hardware2win 3y agoHmm, I use firefox with ublock just fine
- hospitalJail 3y agoiphone problems :( Glad its just a work phone.
- anigbrowl 3y agoVivaldi's ad blocker thankfully means I have no idea what you're referring to. Stay tuned though, by next year they'll have ads of your friends eating mustard skittles, whether they do or not.
- esperent 3y agoHuh, I have uBlock on mobile and I still got the video - which is not an ad, it's just really shitty web design.
- reportgunner 3y agouBlock Origin is the correct one. I'm on firefox with uBO and have no video playing.
- esperent 3y agoYes, I have uBlock origin on Kiwi browser. Seems like people with uBlock are split between getting it and not, so maybe it's just not served to everyone? A/B testing or regional variants maybe.
- lolinder 3y agoFirefox Android with uBO here, and I got it. It's not an ad, technically, it's labeled "Watch More From Fast Company".
- 2-718-281-828 3y agoI just had to check on my iPhone with Firefox and ProtonVPN (doing what it can at) filtering ads. and yes, I saw it, too. that's so fucked up. time to go back to some custom Android ROM with Firefox + uBlock.
- aembleton 3y agoCan you use reader mode on iPhone Firefox? I found that let me read the article without the ad.
- tacker2000 3y agoHaha yea, i thought exactly the same thing! Business insider, fast company, wired, all in the same league…
- aembleton 3y agoYou need to uncheck `Ignore generic cosmetic filters` in uBO.
- BLKNSLVR 3y agoBrave + PiHole + uBlock Origin = no video ad, no top banner ad Firefox + PiHole + no extensions = dumbass video, blank top banner ad (all the space is taken up but no content)
- nicce 3y agoJust to be fair, uBlock on Firefox removes it as well. Just to note, that Brave is adding nothing here.
- BLKNSLVR 3y agoI intended to imply that uBlock Origin was the difference. The choice of browser just represents what I had available to test with where different results were shown.
- flskafdslaf 3y agoFirefox + uBlock Origin = no ads
- lolinder 3y agoThis isn't an ad, it's a really bad promotion for first-party content. I still see it with uBO on Firefox. Maybe Brave has extra visual filters that block this specific div?
- BLKNSLVR 3y ago> promotion for first-party content The pedant in me says: that's an ad. It's just one of the rare ones not delivered by a gigantic network, so it's far less likely to be a scam or malware. Still an ad though.
- lolinder 3y agoFair, but it's a category of ad that uBO has a very hard time with.

- pickledish 3y agoYeah, this pissed me off too. I’m currently combing through iOS safari settings trying to find out how “allow videos to autoplay” was ever enabled (there is a setting for this in “accessibility” but doesn’t seem to fix this website at least so I’m still looking)
- moritzwarhier 3y agoSadly, autoplay-blocking seems to be even more of an arms race than ad blocking. Apart from that, as long as this garbage takes up screen space, it's still not enough. I hope that the person who invented the "sticky video" idea has a long and happy life, in a completely different job, completely separated from anything that has to do with marketing. This is the dark pattern that I hate most on mobile by a 1000 miles.
