Is this true? The US consumes a lot of hard drugs, but my perception is that most users not have their lives fall apart as a result. Curious if there are estimates on the % of e.g. cocaine users who are recreational vs those who eventually end up on the street as a result of their use.
- anon84873628 3y agoI interpret that to mean, "people who use drugs habitually" not just those who dabbled in particular contexts.
- coffeebeqn 3y agoThat’s completely wrong too. Most people are habitual users of some drugs. I guess they mean people with serious underlying mental health issues who are self medicating with hard drugs and unable to keep a job
- brightlancer 3y agoI think you're giving too much credit. It's more likely GP was talking BS than that they made an absolute statement where they really meant a very specific nuanced statement.
- KnobbleMcKnees 3y agoI'm sure someone will turn up with evidence to support this any moment now
- seattle_spring 3y agoNo, but there seem to be a lot of folks in this thread who get their information on this exclusively from DARE and Jordan Peterson.
- altacc 3y agoNo, it’s not true. 13% of Americans over 12 are recent drug users but 13% of Americans aren’t living on the streets due to drug abuse. https://drugabusestatistics.org/ https://drugabusestatistics.org/ And let’s not forget that the drugs that are considered ‘bad’ & illegal are done so totally arbitrarily. Alcohol is the drug with the most negative effects on society but is culturally, politically and legally acceptable whilst something like LSD, with very low rates of harm, is considered a hard drug and very illegal.
