U Aalto wireless charging: distance 5 times antenna size and 80% efficiency

- willcipriano 3y agoA laptop with a 1 foot antenna that let's you charge wirelessly by simply placing your laptop on a desk?
- Scoundreller 3y agoI always wonder about the long term effects of inefficient wireless charging on the device’s long-term battery life. It’s literally baking the device and not just the battery but everything metal (or just ferromagnetic). 80% is better than 50%, I’ll give that.
- metadat 3y agoI've not observed my phones getting noticably warmer with wireless charging compared to regular wired charging. Since heat is the enemy of current gen lithium batteries, it is far more likely that "fast charging" at the max supported rate is significantly worse for the lifespan than a slower, lower current charge session. One advantage of wireless over wired charging is that wireless doesn't cause wear and tear on the wired connection port socket.

This is why I still use my old 1A or less USB ports and crummy cables with thin wires. I usually don’t care about charging speed. I like how Apple can now do “optimized” slow charging from 80% on-ward but would be nice if I could just tell it to go slow in general.
