Slack was down
- enescakir 3y agoCustomers having issues with sending messages in Slack
- progbits 3y agoI have that all the time with Slack, even when there isn't an outage.
- enescakir 3y agoThey updated incident as outage
- stenardo 3y agoprobably gets automatically updated after 15 minutes
- acqbu 3y agoYep, I can confirm it's true: https://status.slack.com/2023-07/08e3781ccbef33d5 https://status.slack.com/2023-07/08e3781ccbef33d5
- furkansahin 3y agoAs far as I can tell, ios mobile app is working just fine. However, there is a serious message send/sync issue on macos desktop app.
- baal80spam 3y agoNot only in desktop app, I use web app and it's unusable right now.
- stbenjam 3y agoSame thing, isn’t it? The desktop app is just electron
- usrme 3y agoSeeing a guide like this (https://slack.com/resources/why-use-slack/how-to-accelerate-your-emergency-response-with-slack https://slack.com/resources/why-use-slack/how-to-accelerate-...) on their home page now kind of falls flat on its face: > A modern emergency response center housed on a reliable digital platform ensures teams are ready for emergency response at a moment’s notice. ...
- tourist2d 3y agoThis is a very silly comment. Slack has near 100% uptime and most people would consider that reliable. Seems like you just googled some reliability article to make this comment? Lol
- LapsangGuzzler 3y agoThe only people who should be allowed make these kinds of criticisms on platforms that go down infrequently when compared to the industry standard are folks whose own apps and platforms never, ever go down. Which is to say, nobody really has a leg to stand on in this regard.
- butler14 3y agoComplete waste of time Still not 100% sure why I pay for Slack, when even Skype has better IM Might cancel our sub and go to discord
- nubinetwork 3y agoIt's not like discord doesn't have its bad days either.
- lexicality 3y agoin the background, IRC raises its head
- KirillPanov 3y agobehind the curtain, Tox pulls the strings
- butler14 3y agoi haven't used irc for about 20 years, but i don't remember having as many problems as i do with slack #quakenet
- coldtea 3y agoWhat problems do you have with Slack? I use it for like 3-4 years, and have some "sending delay" problems about once every six months, that are solved within an hour or so anyway, and otherwise it's rock solid.
- carstenhag 3y agoI find this quite silly. All chat networks (IRC, Discord, Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc) will have issues eventually. On IRC you had netsplits where half of the people could still talk to each other and the rest were disconnected. I would guess it was equally rare (back when I used irc more, 8 years ago?) as outages of "centralized" services today.

- bartvk 3y agoWhich regions are affected? I'm in the EU, seems okay for now.
- ta1243 3y agowas down for a bit, back now
- smcl 3y agoEU was def affected - I didn’t get any notifications on desktop for about 30 mins then my phone was able to send/receive stuff. It’s sort of back now.
- rerx 3y agoSevere problems here in Germany
- shever73 3y agoI've been affected using the desktop app in Ireland. Some messages not sending, others being duplicated and messages from others are not received.
- hans0l074 3y agoIn the EU, and both the desktop & mobile services are down (Slack Enterprise)
- daneel_w 3y agoAnd for a short spell I don't have to feel strangely guilty over not checking up on work during my vacation. Sigh...
- rad_gruchalski 3y agoDo you have to, or FOMO?
- daneel_w 3y agoSomething in-between. I'm the only engineer in my position. The fear is an unnoticed fire. A lot of things are monitored but a few things still require someone to take a quick glance at them at least once a day.
- FartyMcFarter 3y agoIf I were you I'd try to add some friction to that process. Make it harder to access work stuff during vacation, it should help to decrease the bad habit.
- daneel_w 3y agoAs someone else suggested, I've been thinking about uninstalling Slack during holidays. But in lieu of another employee to share my responsibilities with, any potential problem grows the longer it takes before I'm aware of it.
- prmoustache 3y agoDo you?
- daneel_w 3y agoA little bit, because I'm the only engineer in my position.
- kentiko 3y agoTo avoid checking by habit, I simply uninstall the app entirely during my time off.
- steveBK123 3y agoMillions of developers cried out in relief & freedom.
- somecommit 3y agoSweet summer child... just think about those enslaved by Microsoft Teams
- sgerenser 3y agoI just saw an e-mail in my inbox this morning that started with “Slack, one of our main tools for communication and collaboration, is currently unavailable…” and ended with “In the meantime, we recommend using Teams as a workaround.”
- deelly 3y agoSometimes I have the feeling that different type of communication tools is not an issue. You can become burned-out using any tool, and even without using any tool.
- steveBK123 3y agoInstant messaging apps create a higher sense of urgency & expectation of faster responses. Far easier to abuse by bad actors than email.
- sneak 3y agoOnce again: centralized non-e2ee systems like Slack and Discord are a liability, not the least of which is because of downtime. (The DM logs being mined by an acquirer or intruder is another.) Patch out the phone-home Segment spyware and selfhost a Mattermost, or a Zulip, or a Discourse (for non-real-time) for your team. Selfhost a Gitea and a Drone. It's more simple than you think, and you can backup and restore it onto a new hosted VM in minutes.
- konschubert 3y agoYou can do this. Or you can sign up for slack and be done with it. For some companies self-hosting might make sense. For others, the overhead isn’t worth it.
- vesinisa 3y agoIs there a reason to not recommend GitLab?
- 3np 3y agoBigger, heavier, requires more resources to set up, maintain, and use. On the other hand it's more stable, mature, has more features and integrations, and I'd guess more secure. Having run both I'd recommend defaulting to Forgejo[0] or Gitea unless your requirements steer you towards Gitlab. [0]: Fork of Gitea, discussed here previously. Recall that Gitea is itself a fork of Gogs!
- benterix 3y agoI'd add that if you require CI/CD, definitely use Gitlab over Forgejo. I remember they added actions as an experimental feature, but CI/CD in GitLab is quite mature and powerful - it will take time to Forgejo to catch up.
- djbusby 3y agoAnother fan of Mattermost here. Four or five years w/o outage. Maintenance is moving to a new VM every 6mo. Cost is roughly $120/yr. And we can have clients click into our chat w/o requiring them to make accounts with third parties. I really hate the: For support with CompanyA make account to use service provided by CompanyB to contact A. Every time I have to use a Slack/Discord to reach a company I'm spam/alert bombed all over again - triple annoying.
