I'm happy to see this called out. Don't explain to me that I'm holding it wrong. At minimum admit that a shortcoming on your end prevents me doing what I want and think about if or how it's possible to change that.
- hughw 3y agoI've learned to avoid software tools that proclaim they are "opinionated" which usually means it's their way or the highway.
- themodelplumber 3y agoShouldn't it be like: Non-opinionated ... Opinionated ... My Way or the Highway
- willcipriano 3y agoPeople who proclaim themselves opinioned also seem to have bad opinions.
- brookst 3y agoThat’s just, like, your opinion, man.

- aerio 3y ago>they are "opinionated" which usually means it's their way or the highway. That's what opinionated means, yes.
- eviks 3y agoNot really, that's just one of the opinions, another could be to have opinionated defaults with an option to change anything, so highway isn't the only alternative
- jakear 3y agoExcept "opinionated defaults with an option to change anything" is called "configurable", which is the antithesis of "opinionated".
- eviks 3y agono, configurable only captures the second part, there are plenty of projects that are configurable, but have bad defaults, leaving everything to be set up properly by every single user instead of doing tha config upfront (and expressing an opinion re. how it should be configured) For example - being able to change an encryption protocol is "configurable" - Setting the default to be unencrypted so that the user chooses it is "unopinionated defaults". - Setting the most modern encryption protocol by default is "opinionated defaults"
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- jakear 3y agoAll defaults are opinionated defaults. The fact that you consider a particular default "bad" supports that claim more than anything. To your point, setting the default to be unencrypted reflects the opinion "this layer of the stack shouldn't be responsible for handling encryption unless the user has no other choice".
- andsoitis 3y ago> I've learned to avoid software tools that proclaim they are "opinionated" which usually means it's their way or the highway. What is a good example where software is described by its maker as opinionated and where it results in "their way or the highway"? I'm asking because all software need defaults and no software can do anything that all users would want, so the software maker has to make choices of what they offer (i.e. reflecting the maker's opinion).
- TheCleric 3y agoPython formatter Black: https://github.com/psf/black https://github.com/psf/black By using Black, you agree to cede control over minutiae of hand-formatting. In return, Black gives you speed, determinism, and freedom from pycodestyle nagging about formatting. You will save time and mental energy for more important matters. Black makes code review faster by producing the smallest diffs possible. Blackened code looks the same regardless of the project you’re reading.
- hughw 3y agoRuby on Rails? Doesn't mean Rails sucks.. tons of people are very productive on Rails. It uses Ruby idiomatically in a way that I would wish to break out of, which would be difficult and counterproductive, because of its strong opinion that I shouldn't. But I don't want to work in Rails, and Rails doesn't miss me.
- forbiddenlake 3y agoWireguard. If you want to use different options for its encryption, you can't. I don't think that's a bad thing, but for example someone wanting FIPS certification might.
- brookst 3y agoThere’s a reason people use appropriately sized wrenches, which are opinionated, rather than crescent wrenches, which are not.
- hughw 3y agoSure, maybe for tools that need to do one thing, I’d prefer opinionated ones.
- jameson71 3y agoUnix was built on that philosophy
- fuzztester 3y agoYes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_UNIX_Programming_Environment https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_UNIX_Programming_Environ...
- cj 3y agoYes, which is fine as long as the vendor makes it known upfront that it’s their way or the highway. This is a valid business strategy in my experience especially for B2B enterprise SaaS, where you know your product works very well if used to solve a specific set of problems using your SaaS tool in a way that you, the vendor, prescribe. At our company we tell prospective customers that if they don’t like the workflows we demo to them, they shouldn’t buy our product because the customers who like our product are the ones who use this workflow, and people who don’t like our product use strange workflows we don’t recommend. I think the problem is when the customer isn’t made aware of the opinionated workflows/features/etc until after the fact.
- Takennickname 3y agoLol. Yes. Opinionated means they have a strong opinion on how things should be done.
- pixelgeek 3y ago> Don't explain to me that I'm holding it wrong. Where are they doing that?

- jerbearito 3y agoThis does not answer their question.
- jtxx 3y agoyes it does. the phrase OP used was likely a reference to this Apple issue, not that PM is literally doing this
- emptysongglass 3y agoThey also still don't support automatic WKD lookup and sending on mobile 5 years after reporting. Pretty silly.
