Rings.social – Reddit-API compatible and Open Source content-voting platform
- isaacremuant 3y agoThere's no content on the site. Seems like premature advertisement.
- jakear 3y agoHow exactly do you expect the content to reach the site before the users do?
- vagabund 3y agoI know this is a rhetorical question but with a compatible backend like this, could an app like Apollo pay the API fees to Reddit for historical posts, seeding content for the platform, and write subsequent posts to this new alternative database? That way you avoid the cold start problem, and the API fees to Reddit should fade over time as the content becomes stale -- the posts can even be sunsetted once native content is enough to sustain a network. Would that violate any terms?
- rideontime 3y agoI have a hard time imagining that not violating TOS.
- DougEiffel 3y agoI absolutely love your idea but I can't imagine Reddit would contribute to their own demise. Granted, a lot of the decisions they're making over there lately would indicate otherwise, so maybe they'll love the idea. Side note, anyone finding good alternatives? Obviously I love this forum as it does feel more like Old Reddit. But it's scratching a different itch for me. I've been experimenting with the Fediverse and it feels like it's one great app away from taking off. I'm very interested to see this Wikipedia-adjacent project that is supposed to come out and be the new Reddit.

- vczf 3y agotildes.net? I have a couple of invites. Though it's not quite reddit, nor aiming to become reddit. I like the stated philosophy and the discussion quality. https://docs.tildes.net/philosophy https://docs.tildes.net/philosophy
- DougEiffel 3y agoCould you possibly send me an invite? If not, no worries! I like the philosophy as well, and I miss the high(er) quality discussions reddit used to have. I have liked H News for a while but there are some itches it doesn't scratch which Reddit used to.
- vczf 3y agoSure! You don't have any contact info in your profile, however, so I have no way to currently message you.
- satvikpendem 3y agoThe creators should seed the site with content. This is what Reddit and many other social platforms like Tinder did.
- isaacremuant 3y agoBecause you get some users on more organic ways than just posting in HN and expecting people to jump in and fill your product with value when there's none for themselves. HN is a one/few shot opportunity and you better make a good impression.
- jakear 3y agoHN is for hackers to see an idea and perhaps get inspired to build off it in some way. People use it for finalized product announcements but that's not the core.
- SV_BubbleTime 3y agoYou should see if anyone has written any articles about network effects.
- pxue 3y agoReddit founders used fake accounts to fake activity at the start.
- neurotech1 3y agoBack in the day before Reddit, Facebook, Twitter and Social Networks, there were groups that specialized in being "forum launch crews" that would help seed forums with a group of early, genuine users and posts, based on topics and categories to match the overall theme of the forum. The last time I helped launch a forum, this was migrating a group mailing list to vBulletin. With some research, I did locate this Reddit post with some tips. [0] Since this is 2023, One could also use ChatGPT Plus (GPT-4) [1] to generate the content, or the GPT-4 API if available. - Arch-TK 3y agoI don't understand the need for all the padding everywhere. I can fit 3 things on my screen, it makes me feel claustrophobic.
- tentacleuno 3y agoAgreed. I tried to remedy it to the best of my ability[0]; there's a lot of room for improvement. [0]: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36568295 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36568295
- denysvitali 3y agoYeah, I might have exaggerated with that. The good thing is that I made it as a variable: https://github.com/rings-social/frontend/blob/master/src/assets/base.css#L27 https://github.com/rings-social/frontend/blob/master/src/ass... PRs are welcome :)
- denysvitali 3y agoFixed in https://github.com/rings-social/frontend/issues/7 https://github.com/rings-social/frontend/issues/7 btw
- appleflaxen 3y agoIf you are a former redditor, consider r/redditseppuku
- HWR_14 3y agoUnlike old reddit, this site requires JS to function.
- tester457 3y agoI'm waiting for something minimal like tildes or hn to show up. These new competitors are too bloated.
- thorncorona 3y agoi don't think most people care. or would care, ever, if the site worked without js. the people who care about sites running without js also don't contribute to revenue either. like genuinely i don't think there's a more miserable crowd to support, with stronger preferences.
- nprateem 3y ago100%. Techies are such an unrepresentative niche: * Don't like to pay for anything * overly privacy conscious and minimalistic * highly opinionated, vocal and demanding in ways that probably won't help the mainstream (eg want high customisablity) * high levels of autism mean they focus on irrelevant minutae, often perfectionistic. low appreciation of aesthetics * accept things that are broken/way too difficult to use for non technical people * dismissive of things that are easy if they could build them as well Etc, etc
- JCharante 3y agoWho says they don’t like to pay for things?
- sebastialonso 3y agoI'd argue this is the reason Reddit outage is definitely more mainstream than it "should" be (meaning organically). In reality no one gives a flying fuck about subreddits closing, they just want their memes.

- 8organicbits 3y agoOne interesting challenge you could face is that there's a lot of pre-existing bots that are built against the Reddit API. As the site grows, those existing bot operators can point at your endpoint. You could struggle to keep up with spam.
- denysvitali 3y agoGood point! Bots are definitely going to be a challenge regardless of the API
- pineapple_guy 3y agoSearch with no results, login? And explore with four links.. all designed poorly. Not going to cut it.
- denysvitali 3y agoThe search currently only searches through the "rings" (communities). What's designed poorly? Can you extend your feedback a bit please?
- pineapple_guy 3y agoYes, and sorry if it’s harsh. It just appears to be a generic blogging clone. The page I land on needs to make it immediately clear why the site is useful. No explanations or hand waving.
- denysvitali 3y agoNo worries. Harsh feedback is the best feedback because it's the most genuine. I think one of the issues with the search bar, when I posted the link here, was that it was assuming the user inserted some text in lowercase - which is of course a wrong assumption. On top of that, the search bar currently only searches through the rings [1] which is a very limited list. Of course the search bar will improve over time, but there isn't much to search now :) [1]: https://rings.social/rings https://rings.social/rings
- mariusor 3y agoI also work on a link aggregator and I'm probably interested in cribbing the reddit API compatibility layer. Any interest to refactor it into an independent package, or is it tied into your own data model?
- denysvitali 3y agoFor the moment it's tied to my data model, but I don't see why I can't provide a sort of wrapper :) I'm just not sure if at that point it makes more sense for you to just create that part yourself
