Analysis of cancel culture amongst family and friends
- GloomyBoots 3y agoI never liked the term cancel culture, but IMO it doesn’t apply here. Canceling is about life ruination and public humiliation, not simply cutting ties.
- invalidname 3y agoCancel culture is a talking point of the right. Are parents who disown their child because of sexual orientation "canceling" them? This isn't a new idea. I agree that people shouldn't be "canceled" but the framing of this in the media is broken.
- 037 3y agoUnfortunately, this is a significant tool that major religions use to control their members. Specific terms even exist to describe this conduct in some of them. It's anticipated that individuals who depart will be ostracized, even by family members. Often, these are people who joined the faith in the first place because they felt loved and significant for the first time in their lives - perhaps they were dealing with a major loss or they were simply elderly individuals left alone. Subsequently, their ensuing isolation can feel like a heavy penalty.
- 037 3y ago(I've intentionally refrained from mentioning any specific religion so as to avoid causing offense. However, you'll know if your faith practices are in line with what I'm discussing and, if so, I urge you to take action to mitigate the issues in your community if you're in a position to do so.)
- beardyw 3y agoDo you really mean "major religions"? What you describe sounds more like the behaviour of sects.
- 037 3y agoYes, I mean globally recognized religions with millions of followers. Sorry but I'd rather not delve deeper into this. While I initiated this thread, I don't want it to escalate into a flame war or offend sincere individuals who are faultless and have good intentions.
- beardyw 3y agoNo flame war, no offence. I was guessing who you meant and if I'm right that is a sect, with millions of members, but still a sect. That's all. Sorry, just being my pedantic self.
- igetspam 3y agoAs someone raised in a major religion who opted out, I can confirm that I quickly became an outside to my religious community. I don't feel it was much of a loss though. The only reason I knew those people was church. This is probably less common with people who go to church in holidays only. The devout are different.
