Even if those "best models" were open and free, the vast majority of the population can't even afford to run it. I'm no fan of SAAS APIs either, but I struggle to imagine game-changing applications that aren't feasible with the status quo.

There are plenty of models where the SotA doesn't require a DGX A100.

  Many of which are already free and usable for non-commercial purposes. It feels unlikely that the world would significantly change if OpenAI opened their kimono.
