The electron critique is the usual weak sauce even though the headline (performance not as good as native) is technically correct.
75% of respondents to the StackOverflow survey are using VSCode. In a market saturated with alternatives, this isn't by chance nor is it being forced on anyone.
The vast majority of people simply don't care if it's an electron app or not because the difference in performance is inconsequential on a modern laptop or workstation.
- Clamchop 3y agoCounterpoint, Teams is trashy and Microsoft will be moving away from it because of poor performance and memory usage. It's perfectly suitable for some things of course (text editors should be a light lift) but the link draws a circle around graphically intensive workloads. And savings in the memory and cycles department are always welcome even if we've got tons of headroom these days.
- KnobbleMcKnees 3y agoI take your point, but somewhat ironic given that Slack - another Electron app - is eating the market share there too.

- pjmlp 3y agoThe reasons where I reach for VSCode are mostly due to lack of alternatives, like several Microsoft tools for Azure that only exist as VSCode plugins. Or PowerShell IDE, equally replaced by VSCode. It is definitely being forced in some cases.
- KnobbleMcKnees 3y agoIt doesn't surprise me, but Microsoft's vendor lock in for those products is a case fairly specific to Microsoft.
- pjmlp 3y agoYeah, but contradicts the point of not being forced. Another case, official Web IDE for Github and Azure DevOps.
- KnobbleMcKnees 3y agoWhich doesn't apply to the general population, which is what the point being made is about. And your second example is from the same ecosystem / walled garden.
- pjmlp 3y agoMoving goalposts, so when contradictions are being pointed out, now we get reasons why they shouldn't count.
