Juggling Lab GIF Server
- Schiphol 3y agohttp://jugglinglab.org/anim?<any_valid_siteswap_pattern> http://jugglinglab.org/anim?<any_valid_siteswap_pattern> will serve an animation of that [siteswap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siteswap https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siteswap) pattern.
- DoctorOW 3y agoSome of the GIFs on that Wikipedia page appear to have been generated by this website.
- _a_a_a_ 3y ago"Source Self made using the software "Juggling lab" (released under GNU licence)" on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Classic_4beats_passing_2juggler_6balls_side.gif https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Classic_4beats_passing_2j...
- suyash 3y agoThat's cool, is it being generated in real time ? Could have just been statically loaded no?
- arijun 3y agoI would definitely guess not, since 1) you would quickly end up with a combinatorial explosion and 2) they would have had to have been programmatically generated before being statically served, so why not do it dynamically?
- DoctorOW 3y agoIt seems to be both. Dynamically generated only if the combination doesn't already exist. Image links are to static storage.
- justsomehnguy 3y agoSo, this is Juggling Lab GIF Server or this is Juggling Lab GIF Server? Siteswap patters are fun to toy and fuzz http://jugglinglab.org/anim?pattern=%3C339P|333P%3E http://jugglinglab.org/anim?pattern=%3C339P|333P%3E
- batch12 3y agoNice. It also generates stereograms so you can see what it'd look like in 3d[0] [0] http://jugglinglab.org/anim?pattern=%3C3p|3p%3E;stereo=true http://jugglinglab.org/anim?pattern=%3C3p|3p%3E;stereo=true
- harry8 3y agoBug! Depth of the balls doesn't change when they're thrown forward and across or back and across between the 2 jugglers.
- pimlottc 3y agoThe balls aren't moving across sides in the linked pattern. They are in this one, and it appears correct to me: https://jugglinglab.org/anim?pattern=%3C2p|2p%3E;stereo=true https://jugglinglab.org/anim?pattern=%3C2p|2p%3E;stereo=true
- harry8 3y agoYep, I got that totally wrong. I wonder how I managed that. Had near total expectation that I was going to find that the other way around when I went back to check. Dose of humility for the day.

- imurray 3y agoSiteswaps can be juggled with any number of hands, such as the 4 hands of two jugglers: https://passing.zone/4-handed-siteswap/ https://passing.zone/4-handed-siteswap/ A really nice web-app for searching and animating passing siteswaps is: https://passist.org/ https://passist.org/ For example: https://passist.org/siteswap/9968926?jugglers=2 https://passist.org/siteswap/9968926?jugglers=2 In case of confusion: the diagram with arrows is a "causal diagram", showing the throw that is forced by each throw. So linking arrows are not the same ball/club, and the arrows can go backwards in time(!). passist.org will animate solo siteswaps: https://passist.org/siteswap/915?jugglers=1 https://passist.org/siteswap/915?jugglers=1 -- but 915 is animated really high by default. Click on the animation, then the cog, then increase the juggling speed, rather than the animation speed, to bring the pattern down lower. There's also an android app that does similar stuff: https://github.com/namlit/siteswap_generator https://github.com/namlit/siteswap_generator
- samwillis 3y agoWould be fun to feed this into video-to-video stable diffusion to create (none stick figure) animated or photorealistic videos...
- __jonas 3y agoThere is also this: https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/animations/ https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/animations/ If you are interested in more juggling animations. I specifically enjoy this comment: > When making the men juggling men etc animations I made a small mistake which made the smaller men juggle at twice the rate of the larger men. This halves the quality of the smaller men's animation, but I left it because I rather liked the smaller men juggling faster the smaller they got.
- imurray 3y agoI found an archive of another juggling animator by Paul Klimek, the first known discoverer of siteswap, who called it "quantum juggling": https://web.archive.org/web/20140105002226/https://quantumjuggling.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20140105002226/https://quantumju... (Works in Chrome but not firefox for me. I remember it working in firefox, but it's apparently succumbed to bit-rot or the internet archive wrapping.)
- weinzierl 3y agoOh man, this has the vibes of JIS - the Juggling Information Service. This is where I saw this kind of animation the first time l, I think. It was one of the first websites I visited regularly and it is still online. http://juggling.org/ http://juggling.org/
- imurray 3y agoThe JIS database of clubs was already out of date and not responding to update requests ~25 years ago. For an actively-maintained list of events and clubs there is: https://www.jugglingedge.com/ https://www.jugglingedge.com/ -- which is where most of the rec.juggling and IJDb community went when IJDb shut down. There are probably more active forums now, but it's still the cleanest and most comprehensive list of juggling clubs and events that I know of.
- ColinEberhardt 3y agofunny to see juggling GUFs on hacker news, and a reference to the IJDb. I was the creator and maintainer of the IJDb for a great many years. It was sad to have to finally shut it down, but it had had its day :-(
- imurray 3y agoThanks so much for the IJDb Colin E!
- ColinEberhardt 3y agoYou're welcome - it was a blast.
- KomoD 3y agoHow does this work?
- orblivion 3y agoThis is using something called Sitewap notation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siteswap https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siteswap Each throw is represented by a number. Roughly speaking, a number X in the pattern implies that the throw is the "normal" throw when juggling X balls. So a normal pattern for 5 balls is just "5". One necessary but insufficient property is that the numbers in the pattern have to average to the number of balls you're juggling.
- LanceH 3y agoThe pattern described in the initial link is "915". That means throwing a ball to the height of a 9 ball pattern (the height you would throw if juggling 9 balls normally), next ball to a 1 ball height (essentially handing it across), then the third throw is to a 5 ball pattern height. Then you repeat -- starting with the other hand. The three heights add up to 15, with 3 throws in the sequence, so this is a pattern to be juggled with 5 balls. A three ball sequence would be written as "3". "333" would be the same thing as it is just a repetition of the same "3" sequence. Even numbers are thrown to the same hand. There are more advanced notations for throwing two at the same time, or for a pause, and I'm not sure what a "2" would represent (hold in same hand one beat maybe).
