Laggy UI? Try KDE with composition off. (KDE cuz best DE and cuz it's the only DE I know of that lets you toggle composition between boots.)
Experience untold smoothness (which also applies to games!).
You just lose transparency effects and animations.
Fun fact: turning composition off violates some GTK assumptions, leading to minor graphical artifacts in GTK apps, such as rounded corners (which are the default in GTK4 of course) appearing weird. In practice, this is ok since the best apps are usually Qt apps, but GTK devs' position on the matter is funny: they said, "you must always have composition on, and if you don't you're a weirdo cuz there is no reason to not have it on". GNOME mindset at work. :p You can design your GTK GUI such that it doesn't have that issue btw, but they didn't point this out; they only said what I paraphrased. And when it was pointed out that performance is a lot better without composition, even on beefy gaming PC hardware, they never replied.
This is on X11, btw; I don't know the situation on Wayland, but I hope Wayland fundamentally allows you to disable composition too.
