It's dumb ass obvious by now. Everyone and their dog tries to get "just any" uni diploma simply for the sake of it, and when they do, they are under a pile of debt they have no chance of repaying since their degrees are worthless, but they somehow believe they now belong to the "intellectual elite". Yes they suffer consequences of their own mistakes fully, but still it will be better if society could allocate its resources more efficiently.
