What watching my daughter play ‘The Legend of Zelda’ taught me
- opan 3y ago>only the second direct sequel in the 37-year history of the franchise. IIRC, Link's Awakening is a sequel to Link to the Past, Majora's Mask to Ocarina of Time, A Link Between Worlds also to Link to the Past (more of a proper sequel perhaps, the Japanese title has a 2 in it even).
- bluefirebrand 3y agoLinks Awakening is not generally viewed as a sequel I don't think. Edit: Apparently I'm wrong, it's a sequel to Link to the Past like you said. But I think Spirit Tracks is a sequel to Phantom Hourglass, which may have been a sequel to Wind Waker? Edit: I looked this up, and this is the case. Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to Wind Waker, you play the same Link. Spirit Tracks is 100 years in the future but still a sequel, you play a new different Link but it's the same world. Also Zelda 2 is unquestionably a sequel to Zelda 1 The Zelda timelines are super weird, no question, but it's absolutely loaded with sequels. I have no idea what this writer is talking about.
- jeffwass 3y agoCan’t read the article behind the paywall. But recently I showed the original Zelda to my 11yo daughter. After a minute or two she lost interest and said “this game is so violent, you’re attacking these creatures and stealing their gems.” Interesting perspective from across the generation gap!

- shrimp_emoji 3y agoI remember there's a level in Wolfenstein 3D where there's a window and, through it, you see a green field and blue sky. As a kid, I really wanted to go through that window and escape this maze where I have to kill nazis and pick up jeweled golden crosses. That escape would exist, and it would be called Minecraft. But, at the time, in the maze I had to remain. :c
