It's incredible how many people go "I was almost ready to give them money" whilst using Youtube all the time with an ad blocker. I know it, I was one of them for years.
Just buy the subscription. You get the free trial for a month. Nothing changes, the money is not missed, but you actually pay for something you use a lot.
The biggest benefit is not being subjected to ads anymore just by being next to family members who don't use ad blockers. It comes with four slots for family members.
- ThaDood 3y agoIIRC YouTube Premium also comes with YouTube Music, which coming from a former Google Music user, the plan was a no-brainer. If YT Music great? Well, no but it's fine. It has my music, podcasts and decent recommendation algorithm. Paired that with commerical free YT and it's a stellar offer.
- empyrrhicist 3y agoI quit when they switched because I hated YT music so much. Switched to Spotify, and cut out the YT subscription entirely. I watch a lot less YT now.
- ehsankia 3y agoIt was definitely nowhere ready when the transition happened, but they've been constantly working on it for the past few years, unlike GPM which was mostly stuck for years. While it still has a few issues, there's a ton of cool features GPM never had either.
- Thorentis 3y agoWhy? Does Google need to be making a higher profit than it already does? Does YouTube deserve the extra money? For what reason should we pay?
- Gigachad 3y agoWhy does it need to be justified? It’s their product and they are entitled to block ad blockers. Either watch ads, buy the subscription, or stop using YouTube.

- jamilton 3y agoThey're allowed to block ad blockers and people are allowed to circumvent those blocks.
- climb_stealth 3y agoAre they actually making money off youtube? I almost doubt it. In any case I feel it might help to work against the shittification of the internet. Or maybe it doesn't, but at least it feels right.
- bagacrap 3y agoIf you are watching YouTube then yes, it is a useful service that has some monetary value.
- Dylan16807 3y ago> If you are watching YouTube then yes, it is a useful service that has some monetary value. Huh? They asked if it deserves more money. Not if it deserves money.
- bagacrap 3y agoWell, yes it clearly deserves a little more money each time it renders a valuable service at nonzero operational cost. Duh.
- Dylan16807 3y agoPlease look at the earlier comment again. "More" here is a synonym for higher profit. More money per view.
- bagacrap 3y agoBut the context of this discussion is whether you should be allowed to watch YouTube without any ads. So that's a baseline of zero money per view.
- Dylan16807 3y agoI think they're averaging over all viewers. But also even for one individual that allowed ads, youtube premium is a huge increase to how much money youtube gets.
- m681 3y agoNeed? No, not particularly. Deserve? Yes, they are providing a service.
- Thorentis 3y agoThey already make a profit from the service. I'm asking why I should provide them more than what they're already making. I believe their profit already gives them as much as they deserve for the service they render to society.
- mda 3y agoContent creators get paid as well, but I don't think you care about that either. You just want to have the cake and eat it I guess, which is fine as well.
- Thorentis 3y agoI do care about that! But YouTube, the one profiting from those creators, should be the one paying creators more, from their already very high profits. Not me.
- wkat4242 3y agoDoes everyone really use it a lot? I might watch one or two a month, that's it. I will always prefer written content over video. The only time I go for video is when I can't find a written source. With that little use it will not be worthwhile.
- climb_stealth 3y agoHaha, yeah if not using it I wouldn't get the subscription either. After subscribing they actually provide a little page of "Premium benefits enjoyed so far" listing the amount of hours spent watching. For me it says > 120 hours and I have had the subscription for 4 months. So definitely making use of it.
- sammy2255 3y agoNice try YouTube
- zeta0134 3y agoYouTube is by no means the primary reason I run my ad blocker. That it works on YouTube is a side bonus, mostly useful if I need to watch something in an incognito window or while I'm signed into my work account. I pay for Premium on my main account mostly to support the creators. (The good ones tend to do the Patreon thing, and I much prefer to chip in there given the choice, but not everyone on YT does that.)
- climb_stealth 3y agoFully agree with you there. I can't use the internet without an ad blocker.
- blueblimp 3y agoI hate ads and use an ad blocker, but I also pay for ad removal on any site I use regularly that offers the option (which includes YouTube). This seems like a reasonable balance between having the internet be usable while also supporting the services I use.
- jacooper 3y agoI will, if they will stop tracking my every move. But they won't, and I won't stop blocking their trackers either. I shouldn't be stalked 24/7 to sell ads.
- littlestymaar 3y ago> The biggest benefit is not being subjected to ads anymore Until they have reached a critical mass of subscribed users, and they start serving ads to paid users too (à la Netflix)
- colinsane 3y agoi’m an edge case: my computers are amnesiac: if i wanted to watch YT Premium, i’d have to log in again every morning. i have an old Google account, but it was setup with 2FA (TOTP) and Google’s made that login method as burdensome as they can to push users to prefer their apps. even if it were easy to login, i prefer to be logged out so that i don’t get sucked into those godawful YT comment arguments. i watch a couple 5-minute YT videos each day: sure, i’d happily pay 10x whatever they make from me in ads, but there’s no way they could implement that in a way which doesn’t worsen my experience overall. not to mention the whole angle of providing Google with my undeniable legal name.
- Too 3y agoIf I pay for premium, will that also remove all the in-video promotions and calls for smacking like and subscribe? That would be a good deal. Now we are sandwiched between ads both inside videos and between them, and they act surprised people use ad-blockers.
