Really insane how numb we’ve become. This would be unthinkable just a short time ago, and now I’m not even sure anyone is surprised.

- rektide 3y ago> This would be unthinkable just a short time ago For people other than Trump. It's been thinkable expected & all too predictable for this man for a long long time. That he didn't even bother to show up to defend himself is basically a gargantuan cop out, to preserve distance from this verdict of guilt he'd most likely suffer.
- mc32 3y agoWell, maybe it's because of politically motivated accusations such as: https://apnews.com/article/4f255f140b47cce4f586397bc4d0f87c https://apnews.com/article/4f255f140b47cce4f586397bc4d0f87c and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baylor_University_sexual_assault_scandal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baylor_University_sexual_assau... and https://theathletic.com/3980055/2022/12/07/matt-araiza-bills-rape-criminal-charges/ https://theathletic.com/3980055/2022/12/07/matt-araiza-bills... So, because one can't know the motivation or truth behind accusations due to high profile cases such as the above, it's no surprise the population begins to tune out.
- jschveibinz 3y agoWell, HN is not really the environment for anything that smells like political debate. I would guess that your comment is really about the unreliability and/or veracity of for-profit news sources in general, and most rational people would most likely agree with that sentiment. But in the end, the media has no control over the justice system or the actions of individuals that put themselves in legal peril. Public personalities like DJT are targets, and they know that. So, they modulate their behavior to stay out of court. Or, they don’t, and they end up in civil court and the jury gets to decide.
- kadoban 3y agoHe was caught on tape, years ago, bragging about exactly this behavior. Nobody who cares is surprised at all. At least they certainly shouldn't be.
