I accidentally solved this problem by entirely side-stepping socks, because I could, because I switched from management to programming, and I don't live in a cold country.
For about a decade now, I've worn open sandals pretty much everywhere and for almost every occasion. The few times I've had to wear socks (because, dress shoes), I've found some pairs handy in my closet.
- bottom999mottob 3y agoThis might be the play. I avoid wearing socks and closed-toe shoes as much as I can, but I've found many people in the West are disgusted by the sight of feet. Cloud slippers are heavenly.
- kortilla 3y agoSandals are super popular in the west
- GuB-42 3y agoI also know people who hate open-toe shoes for the lack of protection.

- pasc1878 3y agoDepends what protection you are after. I need to really clean my shows as it was very muddy and I was not expecting to go that way so not wering my fully waterproff hiking boots. Yes sandals are easier to clean but won't fell as comforatble
- throwaway1777 3y agoRidiculous. It depends on the style of shoe and the setting more than open or closed toes.
- Aperocky 3y agoI was like you, at one point (2021 or 2022) I reckon wore socks and actual shoes maybe less than 30 days out of a year. If I go anywhere it'd be in a croc or sandals. But then discovered the fun of electric skateboarding. This necessitated wearing skate shoes and socks.. which I bought in bulk, no complaints there.
- adityaathalye 3y agoI suppose sock management is more tractable under purpose-specific conditions. Maybe it takes on the characteristics of gear (utility-dominant), rather than attire (aesthetics-dominant). If utilities are mismatched, well who cares?
- martinjacobd 3y agoSimilarly, I've worn boat shoes or vans without socks since I was a freshman in high school and it's great! The only exceptions are dress shoes and when biking.
