Am I reading this right? Only a 22% fare increase? For completely decarbonizing air travel? That's less than the price variance of just flying at a different time.
- Ekaros 4y agoI don't particularly care about climate change, but 22% sounds acceptable. Or even surprisingly cheap. Taking fifth less trips even would be acceptable to me.
- amelius 4y agoI think it's the wrong approach. Rich people should not escape climate measures. Flying should be rationed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ration_stamp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ration_stamp
- hackeraccount 4y agoThey wouldn't though would they? They'd be paying just like the rest of us.
- bryanrasmussen 4y agoI wonder if they do escape - my definition of a really rich person would include they have their only plane - are the costs of those flights artificially cheap or do they pay the actual price?
- Ekaros 4y agoIf they pay for carbon neutral things, is there an issue? Ofc, maybe we should make all but bare necessities carbon negative, with taxation for example.
- danielrpa 4y agoLet me guess... With you in charge of deciding the fair allocation and who should get exceptions? Another idea: eliminate business travel to attend meetings now that we have amazing remote presence tools.
- amelius 4y agoAnother idea: remove all chairs from airplanes. Destroying the planet should not be comfortable.
- bryanrasmussen 4y agowell I guess those other times will also be 22% more expensive. 22% for everyone everywhere.
- ZeroGravitas 4y agoOne interesting wrinkle of GHG emissions from planes is that vapor trails can be worse for climate at certain times of day. There's still some arguing about how to price this in accurateley but this was part of the reason that Google changed their GHG measure for flights recently. They previously just averaged it, but ideally want to encourage flights at times when it is less of a problem. https://skift.com/2022/09/01/google-flights-changes-to-emissions-calculations-stir-controversy/ https://skift.com/2022/09/01/google-flights-changes-to-emiss...
- usrusr 4y agoYeah, reads like a joke I don't get. If they actually found a way to decarbonize for that little, and not just some compensation scheme bordering on fraud, I'd happily tip them a three digits percentage for the rest of my life.
- karmakaze 4y agoI'm sure we're not reading the headline as intended. We're supposed to be shocked and scared by an upcoming "jump" in prices and travel more today.
