- shrimp_emoji 3y agoThe interesting thing about DS9 was that it was the foil to TOS/TNG/V's idealism. It was set in orbit of a hyper-religious planet, where the Federation's liberal, enlightened mores and rules and regulations failed to mesh with radical zealotry, racism, and institutional corruption. The Captain was jaded from the loss of his wife, and got dropped in an environment where everything the Federation stood for was oil trying to mix with water and where he had to bend the rules to get anything done. (This was all pre-Iraq War!) Besides the fact that it wouldn't sell as much as ADHD schlock today (nothing good ever sells the most), I don't even know if, as a culture, our philosophical development has advanced enough to have anything more to say. What did we learn from the Iraq War, after all? Isolationism is good, actually? We should have tried harder?
