‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ Crafted One of Its More Controversial Episodes
- AYBABTME 4y agoIt's a shame that the Star Trek franchise is now completely void of philosophical explorations.
- shrimp_emoji 4y agoThe interesting thing about DS9 was that it was the foil to TOS/TNG/V's idealism. It was set in orbit of a hyper-religious planet, where the Federation's liberal, enlightened mores and rules and regulations failed to mesh with radical zealotry, racism, and institutional corruption. The Captain was jaded from the loss of his wife, and got dropped in an environment where everything the Federation stood for was oil trying to mix with water and where he had to bend the rules to get anything done. (This was all pre-Iraq War!) Besides the fact that it wouldn't sell as much as ADHD schlock today (nothing good ever sells the most), I don't even know if, as a culture, our philosophical development has advanced enough to have anything more to say. What did we learn from the Iraq War, after all? Isolationism is good, actually? We should have tried harder?
- LinuxBender 4y agoIs this [1] the correct playlist for that episode? I never really got into DS9, was more of a STtNG and original Star Trek series fan. - shrimp_emoji 4y agoDS9 was the best one though! Dark. Gritty. The '90s earth tones and exotic geometry everywhere kind of dark and gritty. Both the best AND worst acting across any of the shows, side by side in the same show. A Shrek 4-esque subversion of the previous iterations. ~Fun~ Tragic fact: it was the first one to be recorded on a new kind of digital tape, and so it's the only one that can't be remastered to higher resolution. :c
- yuppie_scum 4y agoPeople have done AI 4k remasters. I wish P Plus would at least invest the relatively small cost of doing that. It would dwarf the outlay they spent uprezzing TOS and TNG. Many of the Dominion War battle scenes look more impressive to me than some of the NuTrek battle scenes sadly.
