Wanted to get Model Y in the past. Nice comfy car, huge backseat and… a camera filming inside the car. Thanks no. Apparently for drowsiness detection, but I am not buying it. Time of flight camera staring at the driver’s face is kinda normal in car industry. Not a normal color camera filming everything and streaming somewhere like Tesla does.

- jackmott42 4y agoA piece of tape can disable it.
- mijowi 4y agoI put tape on mine
- expertentipp 4y agoYou guys buy premium car and then seal the interior components with tape here an there?!
- lostlogin 4y agoHave you seen what people do with laptop cameras?
- Phlarp 4y agoSo much worse than that, because they go online and simp for the company after doing it
- ChuckNorris89 4y ago"Stop making fun of my favorite billion dollar company. I just gave them 80k of my hard earned cash, therefore it must be good, and you should also buy it."
- Phlarp 4y ago[flagged]
- ChuckNorris89 4y agoBut can your Ford Fusion play Doom or The Witcher 3 on the media unit? Thought so.
- Phlarp 4y agoWon't someone think of the children? A whole generation of high schoolers deprived of the ability to steal their daddy's luxury sedan and bang their girlfriend in the front seat without the car narcing on them.
- recursive 4y agoI don't own a Tesla, and I'm not an apologist. But there are multiple reasons to own the car. And not all of them have to do with saving the planet, cameras, or the glovebox.
- dang 4y agoPlease don't take HN threads further into flamewar. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html Edit: We've had to ask you this many times before. I don't want to ban you but if you keep breaking HN's rules we are going to have to. We've cut you a ton of slack already; it's not infinite, so please fix this.
- roflyear 4y agoPeople do the same for pretty much every product. It is weird.
- dang 4y agoPlease don't take HN threads further into flamewar. This thread was bad enough already but a comment like this is an obvious degradation. We want the opposite here. If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.
- Phlarp 4y agoThe things being discussed in these threads are valid criticism. The cars have deep flaws and the corporation has an expectation that exuberant owners will continue to do free marketing and PR for them. Ban away if you need to but I'll continue to level valid critiques at a tech company selling an $80,000 luxury sedan without a spare tire.
- dang 4y agoYou can easily make your valid points without snark or flamebait.
- Phlarp 4y ago"Snark or flamebait" as determined by tech bros that own the car? On any given day there are 30 fresh topics getting lambasted by the terminally online nerds that populate this site but the second someone brings up Tesla-- Mods show up to enforce "civility" and pass out bans to anybody with 'wrong' opinions. Hacker News being pointlessly negative is such a meme that people blackhole links coming from HN just to avoid the "free condescending advice", seems fitting these same reply guys can't handle the lightest of criticisms against their god-king or his ewaste cars. We get called "the orange site" because name dropping Hacker News on social media causes a swarm of scavengers to attack you like a dead fish hitting the ocean floor. I understand you have a difficult job making sense of the above + trying to prevent it from getting worse but genuinely this interaction leaves me feeling like getting my main account banned from HN would be a badge of honor.

- rsync 4y agoPremium ? Have you been in a Tesla ? It approaches the interior quality of a 3 series or A4 … from below. It is completely inappropriate to classify a Tesla as a luxury car.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- shpx 4y agoIt's also used for pinging you when the light has turned green if you're texting while stopped at a red light.
- rootusrootus 4y agoThat's the exterior camera, not the interior one. The ping happens whether you're looking at the road or not.
- nix0n 4y ago> Time of flight camera staring at the driver’s face is kinda normal in car industry What?
- SV_BubbleTime 4y ago[flagged]
- wittenbunk 4y agoThe other comment was pointing out that ToF has nothing to do with drowsiness/alcohol detection.
- SV_BubbleTime 4y agoLet me go ahead and be first to tell you that there is the stated reason, the real one, and the “well, now that we have it” downstream. Cameras AND ToF for the driver are coming. Only idiots will want it.
- Dylan16807 4y ago> Cameras AND ToF for the driver are coming. Why do I care about "AND ToF"? Okay, it can detect the depth of my nose 5% more accurately. What difference does that make?
- itronitron 4y agoDepartment Of Transportation?
- sorenjan 4y agoFrom 7 July 2024 these rules will apply in the EU: For all road vehicles (i.e. cars, vans, trucks and buses): intelligent speed assistance, reversing detection with camera or sensors, attention warning in case of driver drowsiness or distraction, event data recorders as well as an emergency stop signal; https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_22_4312 https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_22_... Apparently drowsy drivers account for about 100 000 crashes, 71 000 injuries and 1 550 fatalities each year in the US alone, and around 11 600 people died due to drunk drivers in the US in 2020. So to say that nobody was asking for it isn't really true, I think a substantial part of the families to those killed and injured people would prefer if cars contained some kind of obstacle for drunk or tired drivers.
- rootusrootus 4y agoAt the moment, AP still uses steering wheel torque. Just put a piece of tape over the interior camera. I'd be pretty surprised if any of the cameras routinely stream. Too much of a bandwidth hog.
- kinghajj 4y agoThe most recent FSD beta update from a few days ago finally started using the interior camera to track driver attentiveness, according to the release notes.
- sebzim4500 4y agoCover the camera with some tape? That's what I do with my laptop camera.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- JohnFen 4y agoWhy not buy laptops that don't have cameras? They exist, and doing that would at least help to add economic incentive for the continued production of them.
- fomine3 4y agoI'm pretty sure that Apple never remove camera even if millions of people bought cameraless Clevo laptop.
- JohnFen 4y agoThat's almost certainly true. I wasn't asserting that purchasing laptops without cameras would make Apple (or anyone else) suddenly get off the camera train. I was asserting that if you (for instance) buy a Clevo because it lacks a built-in camera, that will encourage Clevo to keep making them. I don't know the world of Apple machines, but at least outside of Appleworld there are several cameraless options out there from major manufacturers. I assume they're sold mostly to businesses, because I've worked at a few companies who only allow machines that don't have cameras and microphones built in.
- submeta 4y agoGet a German car. Privacy is taken extremely seriously here in Germany. In all walks of life. Companies, schools, doctor‘s offices, etc. Edit: I wouldn’t want to touch a Tesla even if it was gifted to me. Seeing the founder behave the way he does (latest incident: Changing Twitter’s logo to a shitcoins image) makes him extremely unsympathetic to me.
- barbazoo 4y agoIs that true for cars made for markets that are not Germany? It's not that German car makers are inherently more ethical so I'd assume they do whatever they can get away with in whatever jurisdictions they sell their cars.
- dgellow 4y agoYeah, German car manufacturers aren’t known for their great sense of ethics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_emissions_scandal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_emissions_scandal
- rsynnott 4y agoThe issue with Tesla is _presumably_ not that they decided to make this available to employees out of sheer evil, but that they made it unavailable through negligence or incompetence. If they went into it thinking “this has to comply with (the rather strict German interpretation of) the GDPR”, this would be less likely to happen.
- dieselgate 4y agoTesla motors was incorporated/founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning and not Musk
- ALittleLight 4y agoEberhard sued Musk challenging his right to call himself a founder and the case resolved such that Musk gets to keep calling himself a founder. Musk was a major source of funding early on, putting in about 6 million out of a 7 million dollar raise, served as chairman of the board, headed product design for the Roadster, and took over as CEO before they launched the Roadster. Tesla publicly acknowledges him as a founder. The founder title is one that a company gives to individuals crucial in the early formation of the company. Musk clearly qualifies. I'm saying all this because I think it's very lame that Musk critics try to say he's not a founder of Tesla. Hate Musk all you want, just use real criticism and not this sophomoric "he's not a Tesla founder" stuff.
- throwaway4837 4y agoFrom purely academic perspective, self-driving cars could probably benefit from eye-tracking data as humans drive cars. Although I agree with you on the privacy aspect. I would need proof that the data is only being used for certain things to feel comfortable with it.
- anecdotal1 4y agoThe cameras do not stream to Tesla. AT&T's cell towers would be crushed under the load
- brandonagr2 4y agoThe camera feeds are processed entirely locally in the car and not streamed anywhere. You can optionally opt in to share certain data with Tesla if you want to, but it's not required.
- rurp 4y ago> Time of flight camera staring at the driver’s face is kinda normal in car industry. Is this really becoming standard? If so, that really bums me out. I considered buying a Subaru for my latest car but one of the big negatives was an internal camera pointed at the driver that couldn't be disabled. It was, at least in part, for driver attention monitoring but performed horribly. It would ding contantly, even when I was staring straight ahead. I have no faith that these video feeds will be kept private and really, really don't want to have to worry that any awkward or embarassing thing I've ever done in a car could be released to the world.
- natch 4y agoIt’s not on unless you turn it on. Also: black tape is a thing.
- bjacobel 4y agoAccepting that privacy intrusion is the default state and putting the onus on users to individually combat it will lead us to some very dark places.
- natch 4y agoIt’s off by default. How is that intrusion?
- TheHappyOddish 4y agoThis is untrue, it's absolutely opt in.
- JohnFen 4y ago> Time of flight camera staring at the driver’s face is kinda normal in car industry. Is this true? That's yet another reason to avoid buying newer cars.
