Human Brain isn't just electricity signals but then LLM is just token predictor?
Given a benchmarking standard, LLM has shown decent intellectual and cognitive abilities.
Tasks being done by human that cannot be expressed within 1000 lines of if-then code, are now being accomplished by LLM.
Is LLM actually a legit proof to show that human brain is just as simple as a bunch of electricity signals flowing around, as now we can replicate certain amount of its functionalities?
Is the judgement for LLM consistent with human brain's?

- vba616 4y agoA human being can pass a math test that is multiple choice without knowing the math. Everybody can understand the difference between getting the answers right by paying attention to patterns in a sloppily made test versus learning the material. A student who avoids learning the material will not be able to use what they didn't learn - no question, no subjectivity, no philosophical mystery. When we see AI operating like such a student, why give it credit for understanding that nobody would give a human being?
- akasakahakada 4y agoWhat is the odd for a random guessing machine to be able to translate more than 10 natual languages and 20 programming languages? Do you still hold the belief that "LLM do not understand stuff" given so many evidences show the opposite?
- atmosx 4y agoWhat is you definition of the word “understanding” in this context? The way you put it, my guess is that LLMs need to start paying taxes and be driven to court for FUD, lies or damages.
- vba616 4y agoWho is the random guessing machine? The student I was talking about is not guessing randomly! They got an "A" by guessing much better than randomly! Yet, they did not learn the subject of the course!
- ActorNightly 4y agoHuman brain, and consciousness, is a bunch of electricity signals flowing around. Except compared to Chat GPT 175 billion parameters, we have about 500 times more, and not only that, we have additional compute in the form of various chemical messaging, and possibly even some quantum effects. LLMs transformer networks are successful because the intuition is likely representative of how human brains function, we we identify the important bits through repeated exposure. That being said, LLMs aren't doing anything crazy problem solving. If you use Chat GPT enough for somewhat complex problems, even in coding, you will see it fall short quite a bit.
- akasakahakada 4y agoI clearly notify where ChatGPT falls short. But accounts for both success and failures, still the level of ability is amazing. That's why I said benchmarking standard, because we can't only cherry picking those failures while completly ignore the success.

- kypro 4y ago> Is LLM actually a legit proof to show that human brain is just as simple as a bunch of electricity signals flowing around Does a plane a prove that it's as simple as having wings to fly? I think it's fairly well accepted that the human brain's cognitive abilities come from its complex electrical network of neurons but I don't think LLMs do much to prove this. We have far better evidence of this from simply observing human brains and the brains of other animals. That said, the success of LLMs, or ANNs more generally, suggest that the abstractions we have made about the human brain and the nature of cognition are likely correct. Eg, cognitive ability probably doesn't come from the biological matter of the brain, but the way in which that matter is wired up. > Is the judgement for LLM consistent with human brain's? It's an interesting point. I've wrote several comments pushing back against people suggesting LLMs are "just predicting the next token" because it seems reasonable to me that for LLMs to be good at next token prediction that they would have to learn how to reason – and there are numerous examples of LLMs appearing to do just that. I suppose it would be easy to dismiss the human brain in a similar way to how people dismiss LLMs though, "its just some electrical signals flowing around! It doesn't really understand anything".
